overclocking
« on: January 21, 2012, 09:37:22 PM »
i have my AMD athlon x4 630 stock running at 2.8ghz (stock clock) ive now overclocked it via BIOS to 3.0ghz and stock voltage. should i keep overclocking? rember im on stock cooling but running aces high 2 beta maxed out on 3.0ghz(My bench mark) its only at 109*F on stress tester on 100% for a hour my max temp is 137*F
SHOULD i keep overclocking intill my system becomes unstable or gets to hot? would love skuzzy's word on this
i have a 600watt thermaltake  T2-600W PSU and a AMD 880g north bridge and a amd 700 south bridge also 8gb of DDR3 ram (forgot to see how many mhz its running at in BIOS) and all stock cooling.

If you already run AH maxed, why would you need more? :headscratch: If you feel like enjoying a light show in your case, go ahead. Be sure to film it so we can post a guide of what not to do.

only oc as much as you have to.  my 2500k can do 4.9 easy with no problems. but it doesnt really run ah any better than the current 4.5 I have while running just as good as 4.2.  if you looking for the max you can go every cpu is different.  some oc like crazy while others you can only get 10% or they become unstable.

if you want to test how far you can oc, then just go a little at a time till it becomes unstable then downclock a little and check again.  hopefully you wont damage anything.  I have never been brave enough to test how far mine went.

i want to overclock because other games wont run fully with 60fps (eg BF3 can run high with 50fps but on ultra im high 20s) when i try to overclock anything past 3.0ghz i get this error message when starting windows "The file is possibly corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computed checksum." then it reboots please know i did not change the voltage for the CPU and did not mess with the ram at all (not overclocked or underclocked) do i need to bump the voltage some?

just bumped her up to 3.2ghz (my goal) because the athlon x4 630 comes with its multiplier maxed out at 14x but only 200 ref clock i had to change the ref clock and changing the ref clock affects the RAM, my DDR3 RAM couldnt take a 6.65 multiplier (stock) so i put it on 5.56 multiplier.

BF3 performance is to a large part graphics card dependent. Overclocking won't bring you extra fps unless you have an up to date graphics card that is cpu limited. You should have minimum of Radeon 6870 or Nviida 570-580 to get cpu limited in any game.

I unlocked the other two cores in my phenomII black edition 555 at 3.2ghz to see if it would work and decided to leave it at 2 cores because I have nothing that requires more than 2 cores at the moment.

ive got a Radeon 6790 overclock it seems to run it fine how ever when i exit the game i see my cpu usage is 80-100%.

i tested BF3 this morning i can run ultra with solid 40FPS and im happy with that.
on the note of my Radeon 6790 its OC is at 920mhz i belive thats 20mhz more than a stock 6870 and the memory clock is 1160mhz a tab below the radeon 9870.

noticed something werid. people say that AMD CPU's use one core of power in games and such how ever my monitoring software clearly shows all cores being used.

The game may use one core only, but that doesn't mean other tasks would be limited to the same one. Also, although AH mostly uses only one core on AMD processors, that doesn't mean other games couldn't use more. Some games lean more towards AMD/ATi, some others towards NVidia and some try to balance between them.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

what type pf monitoring software are you using?  some games will use only 1 core, while others will use more than 1

even Aces high now will acknowledge more than 1 core on the "Newer Phenom II AMD processors" .......... I still say it is a 50/50 deal whether Aces high will use more than 1 core on AMD, all depending on a persons PC setup and  will only use 1 core if the AMD processor is older than the Phenom series ...... Phenom II series is where Aces High starts to utilize 2 cores ........ iirc,  Skuzzy posted something about this a month or so ago in one of the threads....

and as Bizman, has pointed out...... other games will recognize and utilize an AMD multicore cpu, depending on the game's coding

as for your 6790 & overclocking it....... I built my 2 daughters'  Mother a PC last year, and I originally opted for an XFX HD6790 1 Gig VC......... thinking it would do very well for her...... I ended up changing it out for an XFX HD6870 1 Gig VC............. the 6790 just would not keep up in her online RPG games of EQ2, EveOnline, etc..... the stock factory clocked 6870 blowed the 6790 away in all aspects / views .....   now whether it was just a bad card from the getgo, I do not know....... but it did fine with everyday PC tasks......... it just could not handle the hvy gaming aspect......... and both of her VC's had dual cooling fan setup on them......

be very careful in your OC'ing attempts........ you could very well takeout / burn up more than just a VC or a CPU .... you could damage alot more ......

and again, if you don't mind sharing with us, what type pf monitoring software are you using?

Give this one a shot:
