Looking for gun suggestions (Sporting Clays)
« on: January 25, 2012, 08:43:53 PM »
I'm looking to get a nice O/U 12 ga for my 30th B-Day next month. I am budgeting around $1500 and right now and I have my heart set on a Browning Citori White Lightning as seen here: http://www.rockwellarms.com/Store/ProductDetails/Browning-013462304-Citori-White-Lightning-12-Gauge-28-Shotgun

Does anyone have experience with browning citori models or recommendations on other guns in the same price range? Basically looking for 12ga, 28"(minimum) barrels, O/U, and decently reliable. I will be shooting 1000+ clays a year. Right meow I shoot with a 28" "Remington" semi auto and it shoots well but a nice O/U is just plain sexy.

I've got a Citori 625 I use for my pheasants. good field gun, I've used it for clays to good success. I can avg around 19/25 clays with it (clay shooting for 10 years) but for clays I usualy prefer my Remington 1100 trap.

one of my dad's friends has a white lightning and he loves it. I've put a couple of rounds through it and its a blast just to shoot. breaks nicely and trigger pull feels great on it. If I had the money I'd get one

Only 18.5" barrel  but this baby is multi-purpose. I'm sure it would
fill your needs in target shooting, hunting, and home protection.
A very nice tactical shotgun! Fast shooter, less recoil than standard 12 Ga.
shotguns due to design. AA 12 is a Badas$$ though :aok

It's for show, he's shooting clays. Not sure how that is "sporting" though......  :D
edit that-unless you mean the AA12, I can't look at any links here at work.

 :huh

...Ok, I need to ask it.  Has anyone here ever shot a round of sporting clays with a tactical shotgun?  I'm just curious, as it would seem to me to be pretty sub-optimal with the short barrel and cylinder bore.

My only experience with Citoris is secondhand from a couple of guys I knew that took their competitive trap shooting pretty seriously.  They had no trouble with them.  My personal opinion when it comes to shotguns and rifles is, if it feels right for you, use it.

As far as heavy guns, more weight most of the time means less recoil.  That's a good thing in my world.

I would think a semi auto might be OK but I don't really know never having seen on in action. I once saw someone try shooting clays with a pump action shotgun, he just wasn't quick enough. It was much better with the usual double barrels. I actually hit 50% of the clays, the first time I'd even held a shotgun. I really enjoyed that sport.

Silver, look to see if you can find a Winchster 101 with screw in chokes.

In any case make sure the shot gun fits you. Spending big bucks on a big name gun that does not fit you will elad to score lower than if you had some cheap gun that did fit. For adaptability I do recomend the screw in chokes. It gives you more options with the same gun.

FWIW I have a Japanese manufactured OU that fits like my old 101. Both have fixed chokes and I have used them for everything from skeet to ducks. The guns never let me down.

I have shot a round of clays with a tactical shotgun.  It even had ghost sights it had slightly less range but it wasn't too bad.  The worst part was having those funky sights.

I'm kind of fond of my Winchester 1400 semi-auto. I currently hold a lifetime skeet shooting record of 5 for 5. I would like to do some more skeet shooting, but I'd probably ruin my 100% lifetime hit percentage.

Seriously, I'd buy a Browning Citori Model 625. It might be out of your price range, over under Browning's are fun to shoot.

Good luck with your shooting.

I have one, great gun.
