I'm certified....
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:27:40 AM »
took my EMT state written today, passed it. little worried going in, many of my peers in the class failed it a few times, but I got through it first try. Assuming I get accepted, attending school for paramedic certification beginning this coming fall.  :x

Congrats!

I have fond memories of taking my EMT many years ago. Keep going in school, I would never suggest anyone work as an EMT; they make little money for the amount of crap they have to put up with.

Keep it up! As already noted, pay absolutely sucks for what you are really doing. Use it as a stepping stone to get into Nursing. As an RV you will definitely make a living wage. You can always specialize in ER Nursing as well.

Good on you. :aok
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

can do a better job at changing rule #1 then a Basic can  :lol

Congrats!

This is why I want to get my medic cert. the Basic will do ofor a few years before I'm thrown into the real world with rent/mortgage and the sorts, but I know I'll need more then 10-15 an hour.

also Why I want to be a medic. if it gets to be too much, I can challenge the RN or LPN test in MA. not sure which one it is, but I'll have a better chance of job security in the future.

You can also use the money from later specialization to pay for medical school.  In areas like Endocrinology, there are TONS of people who need help with diabetes.  The pay from having a private practice is good, too, but I don't advise becoming a doctor for the money; they don't pay my mom enough for the craziness of it all.

through continuing education courses that are required to keep my license I will learn a lot about many many different diseases and the sorts, in the future I feel as if I would do better in the broad field of medicine rather than a specific (unless its a trauma center), if I do follow that road.

Congratulations MaSonZ.
I've been a medic in Chicago for 15 years and a firefighter for the last 2 (not as old as Elk  :neener:) the best thing you can do, as some of the other guys have stated, is continue going to school and also apply to every city and town that looks appealing. A lot of my buddies have their RN and work in the ERs on their off days making bank. Remember to document, document, document. If you don't write it, it didn't happen. I get subpoened by the state to testify in all sorts of cases at least twice a year and often it's years after i was on the call. The most recent subpoena was for a run 5 years ago. It is probably the second most important thing you can do to protect yourself after BSI/scene safety.

By the way what state are you licensed in and what city/town are you looking to work in?

documentation is one other thing that the instructors drilled into us outside of BSI and Scene safety.

im in MA, hoping to apply to the local ambulance service (MA, CT, NY corner), if I don't get accepted there I am going to have to bite the bullet and travel almost half way up the state for a job. hopefully that doesn't happen, but I'll take what I can get right now. as mentioned, next year I'm hoping to go to college for paramedic cert. I wouldn't physically begin the medic classes until my sophomore year second semester, but the course director wants us to run with the local EMS if we can. rumor has it the town I would run with is damn near the busiest in the state. good expierence.
