P47N
« on: January 30, 2012, 01:57:35 AM »
I've begun to fly the 47N a bit, normally with 75% fuel load. That loads about a 25% in the left and right wing tanks along with full aux and main. Should I burn the left and right wingtanks first? Or burn the aux down first?

That's more fuel than you need unless you're escorting bombers across the map. Go with 50% and a center drop, maybe (if you even need that much!).

The thing about the N is it has the same engine as the M and the same general performance... It's just heavier. So saving weight wherever you can will help improve its overall fighting abilities. The biggest source of weight? Too much fuel.

It cruises super well on reduced settings. There's no drag penalty after you jettison a DT on it. Therefore, take less internal and load 1 center or 2 wing DTs if needed.

My $0.02. When you go light, you can make the N dance.

I say too much fuel also.  I prefer the D40 with the lighter ammo load for it's 8x50 cals.  3 Eggs and 10 Rockets.

For air combat I say fly the M.
If I had a gun with 3 bullets and I was locked in a room with Bin Laden, Hitler, Saddam and Zipp...  I would shoot Zipp 3 times.

Yeah, that's waaaaaay to much fuel, you could go seven or eight and back with that much. Get at least twenty five w/ a drop and BnZ. Also it helps if you get the light 8 .50 cal package (200 rounds I think?). If you want to do short range P-47 bombing go with the D-40, same plane but less heavy and better climb rate.

I used to take a single DT and 50% fuel, it gives me enough to climb out and not burn down to much gas, also allows me to burn WEP a little longer.

Never take the Center DT as you add a DT rack it also adds drag which slows your aircraft, take the pair of wing drop tanks (75gal) and drop one of them.

Best way to do so is type .salvo 1 then salvo the left tank off, this leaves the right tank on - just remember to ditch it the second you see an enemy con as you are horribly unbalanced.

I usualy only fly the N with 100% and the 150 gal wing DTs. take er' to 25-35k and pick the pickers or kill bombers. Its about the best plane to be in up there.
on the deck( 15k or lower) I prefer the lighter D-40 with 75%

however if you're planning on not going to far, I'd bring 50% with a center DT. burn WEP to 8k and drop it. run the main tank ALWAYS incase of a main fuel hit, that way you have about 5 mins of aux at max cruise.

if you want to practice dogfighting send me a PM and we'll hit the DA

IIRC it's there whether you take the tank or not on American birds.

For German planes, however, your statement is true.

Was always the impression the centerline wasn't there only the wing pylons?
If you look at the F4u1-a it does not have a center line pylon unless you add a bomb/DT.

The whole "extra drag" argument is moot, really.  If the wee bit extra "drag" is the cause of someone getting shot down then they shouldnt have been in that situation to begin with.

The parasitic drag that 1 DT on 1 wing causes is far worse than any left over center-line shackle will ever cause.   :rofl

Either carry both DT's out or carry the single on the center line.  Seriously.

Agreed.
