In Bud Anderson's biography, he mentions a flight he and Yeager were on and grew bored.  So they dropped their drop tanks on the deck and turned around and strafed the drop tanks to see them blow up.

Not sure why you quoted me for that one...sure, they can catch fire, but they're just as much set to catch fire as any automobile fuel tank, as any driver will be just as upset at having their car rigged to explode as a pilot.
And, that's one of the few books I actually have read. Got it cheap from our Library clearance, one of my favorites.

Thats not true at all. Lots of guys have thought about having the ability to drop tanks and explode them by shooting them. I always thought it would be cool to kill troops running to the map room that way or essentially engulfing the map room with exploded drop tanks to protect it.

Wrong, they didn't drop a bomb to ignite teh napalm canister.  It had its own ignition source that would cause the napalm canister to break and explode on impact.
