As for the OP ... an EMP blast would fry all consumer electronics but it would not knock out the power grid as so many fear. Power companies shield their primary installations from big EMP explosions because their equipment tends to explode and generate large EMP blasts. Granted, its not the same as a nuke EMP but distance wise the EMP from a transformer blowing up ten feet away is about the same as a nuke going off 50km away.
Your ipod, cellphone, car electronics, etc however will be fried but its not going to wreck the life of the avg person. The only problems would come from banking systems and computer data lost (but then again, its why companies back their data in bunkers to begin with..those things are EMP shielded). Heck if anything and EMP blast would boost the economy from the sheer number of sales it would generate post-blast
