More likely a very small part of the population was partially immune to the virus and was able to resist the initial outbreak. However a bite from a rotting walker carries more than just the zombie virus and like a Comodo Dragon, a lot more bugs and pathogens that combined overwhelms the bitten's immune system leading to death and zombification.

I think they are teeing up the big confrontation with the other group of survivors, probably the event that finally drives them all off of the farm in two episodes.
