I would hardly call Jalopnik a news site, I had never heard of it before this link anyway.  Also, I don't think the article's author is trying to make fun of this man, and I don't think that's how most people take it, either.  You have to admit that his hobby is a little outside of the norms, a little unusual, so it's interesting to us; that doesn't mean we think this guy is any more crazy than the rest of us.
