I never try to compare AH vs. FSX with the expectation that AH should be as good, eye-candyish, as FSX.

FSX doesn't have to handle 700 players in a single 'world' like AH does.
exactly, but others keep doing so.

And for the record, FS can handle 100's of people without a drop in performance than if it was just one person.

I'd also like to point out that our new AH2 models not only look as good, if not better, that I can run them on my laptop.  FSX with everything turned to minimum is essentially unplayable for me.

Maybe because I don't have any 3rd party scenery add-ons, but for my money the ground scenery in AH looks much, much better then in FSX.  (FSX has better clouds though)   Maybe part of it is that FSX is trying to replicate real scenery.  But even beyond that, the ground in FSX just looks flat... the roads, grass, fields, buildings are all flat and all have the same texture.  They do throw in the odd building that has 3 dimensions in the bigger cities, but for the most part the ground in FSX just looks like a big vinyl floor colored with abstract earth-tones in a random pattern.

Plus I can run AH on max settings, and get 50-60 fps always.  In FSX with the graphics sliders about 2/3 to max I stutter along at 15-20 fps, (even at minimum settings I only get 30-35 fps) and -like I said- it looks like crap.

As for the aircraft models, I'd say the latest AH models are as good or better then the stock FSX ones.  I do have some payware FSX planes that look better though.
I honestly would prefer prettier ground scenery over prettier airplanes though, since I'm in the plane, looking at the ground, not the other way around.

Not being a computer whiz, I don't understand how one program can look great and run fast, while another similar program looks crappy and runs slow.  :headscratch:

You can't play FSX stock. That's like still playing AH from 2004. You need mods and payware like Real Environment Xtreme.

A proper FSX setup simply isn't comparable to AH at all. Different league.

Question...

How much of a framerate hit do these aftermarket scenery add-ons make?

Like I said, even with the stock FSX scenery sliders at 2/3rds.  I can only get ~18-25 fps.  While my computer isn't a "gaming" system.  It's no slouch either, I've got a 4 core 2.4Ghz processor, 8GB of ram and a Radeon 4850 video card.  It handles AH with all the eye candy just fine, but chokes on FSX looking much worse.   I don't get it  :headscratch:

Point is if these add-ons have any negative effect on framerate at all, they would make FSX unplayable.  That said, I would love to get some pretty scenery for at least North America, if my system could run it.

In my experience, the planes/vehicles/scenery addons don't take much

Some of the mods actually increase performance, but your R4850 card is the bottleneck in your system. If you can afford to upgrade you gfx card you should. Just about anything on the market now will be a major improvement.

That's HTC's niche market. They try to inch out every bit of performance they can using the simplest gfx shaders available so that people with office computers can play the game. FSX is not such a game. It's a resource hog.
