Banning use of Historical Squad names?
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:23:37 PM »
I find the use of historical squads/etc very weird and slightly awkward (To say the least). Does anyone feel the same or agree on this?

No... why do you find it wierd? It's a combat flight sim dedicated to WWI/WWII... why WOULDN'T they have historically accurate squad names?

Well, its a simulator; not a forced recreation.

I've never got the feeling that we were trying to re-live WW2; just take the airplanes out of it and throw them together: Right?

More like swing dancing instead of creating a time machine.

What's wrong with honoring WWII squadrons?

Nope, that's only the MA. FSOs, Scenarios, and AvA are make to simulate WWII. Technically the MA is also made to simulate WWII, just a lot less organized and with 3 sides.

Let's ban the use of historical airplanes too.

For those of us who've been at the WW2 aviation history bit, for far longer then there have been online flight sims, it adds to the fun/immersion to use a historical name and skins.  My 80th FS Headhunters fly 38s the majority of the time and use skins that are correct for the 80th.  It's meant as a way to connect to that history while knowing it's not real here.  It's a good way to share the history.

Throw in special events too.  Getting the chance to dive into the history of a particular squadron you are flying with in a scenario is half the fun.

Frankly it would be idiotic to ban the history.  Might as well make a fictional airplane and paint it pink for everyone then and call it "cartoon airplane world'.

Trying to get as close to WWII air combat as the virtual realm allows is exactly why I'm here.
