instead of trying to recreate pearl harbor we might switch to the death star attack, then again the colonial warriors might object to the names too.

I find the use of historical squads/etc very weird and slightly awkward (To say the least). Does anyone feel the same or agree on this?

I didn't go on to read all the posts but wanted to answer your question about awkwardness.  I do find that my interest in a very ugly part of history has a bit of discomfort with it.  I cringe when I see the devistation and the mutulated bodies as well as the emaciated survivors of WW2.

In Aces High, I tend to think more of the mechanical advances as well as the historical aerial tactics, than of any actual WW2 ideology.  There were honorable men and women on both sides of the battle.  I believe that many of the airmen were focused on doing their duties as soldiers, and keeping their friends alive.  In this respect, I feel no different in identifying with historical squadrons than I did as a kid running around the neighborhood with sticks mimmicking sounds of war and calling ourselves GIs.

Alternate reality simulated in reality.

It's a sim!

It's a game!

Wait ... it's both!

I won't be hurt by being shot down by a Spit being remote controlled by a 'YerMomma' squadron guy/gal portraying them-self as 'DethMonger' and won't be worried/embarrassed if they shoot down my 'VF-17 Jolly Roger' F4U being remote controlled less efficiently by me .... portrayed, somewhat, through an AHII online persona I call 'Ensign Guthrie.'

And hopefully nobody will be upset by my not saluting in a text buffer I have shrunk down to minimum scale as to not impede my field of view.

why WOULDN'T they have historically accurate squad names?
Some folks might find it disrespectfull. I believe that it's a good way to HONOR the actions of men who REALLY FOUGHT and REALLY DIED in those units. However the behavior of SOME of the AH pilots flying under those bloody flags is anything but honorable ... and could EASILY be construed as objectionable.

I think the distinction is one of those who wish to honour past squadrons and those who would wish to wear the mantle of past squadrons.

Where historical squadrons still exist.................. (and some do. )    I suppose the polite thing to do would be to ask them (the actual squadrons concerned) if its OK.

If afraid of the reply then I would question whether the motivation was one of honouring or just being a wannabe hero.

However being formally  given permission by e.g 41 Squadron RAF to fly their colours in game......................... ...... :salute

I very rarely see one flying under a historical squadname being dishonorable. Let it be an english, american or german historical name. I know 1-2 exceptions but thats very rare.
JG11, KN, 71st, 80th, Duxies, VF-17 i think, 39th Cobras, mostly good men who fly for the fight.

Knite,

Thats japanese roughly for fishermens association. I think it's a joke and a troll to see if we are awake.

Kind of like the word Kemosabe from the Lone Ranger really comes from the Minnisota Ojibwe word "giimoozaabi": One who sneaks.
