3D monitor use in AH
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:37:33 PM »
Something new to chew on.  I just bought a Asus VG278H monitor.  It has 3D capability which seems to work fairly well with AH.  The biggest problems I have found so far are as follows:

1.  Icons for aircraft stand out from aircraft.  It makes it difficult tracking an enemy aircraft because it messes with your sense of sight.  I found I have to map the icons to my stick so I can turn them off when engaged with enemy aircraft.  This of course leads to problems with situational awareness if you forget to turn the icons back on.

2.  When engaging enemy aircraft I have not been able to identify hits on enemy aircraft.  The hit sprites do not seem to be rendering or visible in the 3D mode.  I have tried it with and without tracers with no luck.

Any Ideas, suggestions or fixes that you might be aware of.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Here is the kicker.  Answer from Skuzzy:

I cannot imagine a monitor being able to properly render a 3D image of the game as it is not getting anything but a 2D image.  I am surprised it works at all.

There is really not anything we can do.

If anyone else has a 3D monitor and has used it in AH I would like to know how it is working for you.

I've used 3D for about 6 years.

I had an Emagin Z800 headset which died 6 months ago after 5 years of heavy use. It used the old nvidia drivers, and frame sequential. On that the icons used to sit to the left. And my gunsight was always off (but that was realistic as I have a dominant left eye).

I now have a Vuzix Wrap 1200VR, it uses Side-By-Side (far superior way of doing 3D). It has no issues, except the gunsight which is my eyes.

Oh and skuzzy is a grumpy old fart, ignore him. If he could he'd play AH via CLI.

Here's a youtube video of me in AH (in 3D) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0qvQQjdFjM

Well you did originally post it in tech support which on its own implies that you're asking for their help in fixing your 3D issues.

Skuzzy was simply stating that since they don't do 3D then there's nothing they can do to fix it.  It's kind of not any different than you somehow getting AH to run on your Android phone and then asking them for help on getting it to run more smoothly!  He was simply being unbiased and keeping his personal feelings about 3D technology (whether for or against it) out of it.  It has nothing to do with him being a "grumpy old fart" and a LOT to do with professionalism.

I hate it when people are badmouthed (even jokingly) for simply doing their job.

Well I have not badmouthed skuzzy.  I am only trying to find out if anyone else in the community is using 3D monitors and if so try to build up some information for others who might be getting systems that will play AH in 3D.  It has to start some where.
