Week of february 23, 2012--Midway

Midway

A month after striking in the Coral Sea, the Japanese
launched an all-out assault against Midway Island in
what was obviously intended as the first step of a grand
attack upon Hawaii and continental United States.
The Navy was ready, and the heroic pilots from naval
aircraft carriers inflicted a major sea defeat upon
two great converging forces northwest of Midway. The
enemy lost four aircraft carriers, at least two heavy
cruisers, and a number of light cruisers, destroyers
and transport - all by aerial attack.

Oooooh no enemy icons, nice!

Not that I think it matters much but I don't think they had zeek 5's til later as the late model A6m3-32 wasn't delivered until April '42 two months before Midway in June. I'm such a bad shot, I need the extra cannon to knock down those tough little Wildcats.

B-239 should not be there.  It has much better turning capabilities than the F2A-3 and ahistorically gives the Americans an aircraft that can flat out turn with the A6M2. I think that is a pretty significant change in the balance of power.

"The Buffalo was built in three variants for the U.S. Navy, the F2A-1, F2A-2 and F2A-3. (In foreign service, with lower horsepower engines, these types were designated respectively, B-239, B-339, and B-339-23.) The F2A-3 variant saw action with United States Marine Corps (USMC) squadrons at the Battle of Midway. Shown by the experience of Midway to be no match for the Zero, the F2A-3 was derided by USMC pilots as a "flying coffin."[5] The F2A-3, however, was significantly inferior to the F2A-2 variant used by the Navy before the outbreak of the war."

That in no way contradicts what Karnak said.

Also the FM2 is a 1944/45 design. A6M5/A6M3 were already covered, shouldn't be there either. No P-39s or P-40s on Midway either.

you guys need to put a little more checking into the historic setups. Seems almost whatever you wanna fly sometimes, instead of what was really available/used.  :D

Here is a nice little article on the Battle of Midway airpower:

http://www.centuryinter.net/midway/air_battle.html

Incidentally 10 days after the battle on June 17th (POA, 7th Air Force): P-40s of 73d Fighter Squadron, 18th Fighter Group, aboard the aircraft carrier. USS SARATOGA (CV-3) are flown off the carrier at Midway to replace USN aircraft lost in the Battle of Midway. The P-40s begin dawn and dusk patrols which continue until the P-40s are relieved on 23 Jun 43.

I don't think a little deviation from the actual planeset in AvA is the end of the world if it encourages a few more players to engage. Knowing and researching the history is interesting in itself.

Yeah, the AvA does seem to tilt that way when it gives an advantage to the Americans or Germans.

I think the A6m5 is the top plane in the lineup here Karnak in this case.

Yeah you were doing  :ahand to me all night. It didn't seem to matter even when we switched sides.  It is amazing how quickly the rust forms when you can't play as often as you use to.  Good fights though,  :salute jaeger
The real problem is anyone should feel like they can come to this forum and make a wish without being treated in a derogatory manner.  The only discussion should be centered around whether it would work, or how it would work and so on always in a respectful manner.

MOTD might usefully be amended to show that Bishops and Rooks are the two enabled countries.  If you wander in as a Knight your carriers are sectors and sectors away from Midway and you can't command them to get closer.  I nearly wandered out, thinking the arena needed to be reset, before I figured out the mystery.

Rook carriers (the ones close to the island) have no planes.
