I just don't see the 4-Cannon Sea Hurricane with 4 x RP3 rockets as being all that uber off a carrier...

I'm not sure where this puts your argument, but in the photo you included, the Hurricane very clearly sports the circled "P" for "prototype" marking the RAF used during WWII:
