« Reply #1 on: February 27, 2012, 03:58:19 PM »
Skuzzy since patch2 came out I have had very frequent ctd's.  Typically every other sorti or so ends in a ctd.  I ctd on runways taking off, flyning level with none within vis, ctd in furballs, ctd sitting in the tower, and now I even ctd to desktop in my sleep.

I haven't changed anything in my system in months, and months.

I have tried everything I know of to fix, even re-installing the game more than once.

Random crashes are difficult to fix and more difficult to diagnose.

I would start with disabling any/and all of the new graphic resources, along with anti-aliasing and then try the game to see if any of those options are causing or exacerbating the problem.

Is the crash to desktop random, or is there something that can be done to reproduce it?  When it happens, are you getting the error box from Windows about the application having a problem, or are you just back to your desktop?

What anti-virus, if any, are you running?
Are you running iTunes?

I noted your swap file usage is rather large for Windows XP.  Seems to be a number of background processes added to the basic Windows stuff.  There could be something there.

Also note, once an abnormal termination of the game occurs, it can corrupt settings files which will then cause more problems.  Try renaming the "settings" folder, in the games installation directory, and see if that helps.

You should cut the sound hardware acceleration back one notch as the sound device you have does not have any hardware to assist in sound processing.  It is all being done by the CPU, in which case the "hardware acceleration" is simply an adjustment to the priority the CPU will give the device.  Check for a later driver as well.

I cannot help but scratch my head about the reported amount of system RAM.  It is a rather odd number.  Are you mixing different sizes of RAM modules?

That's what 32-bit XP reports for 4GB of RAM.  I just ran DXDiag on my work PC, and the amount is within several bytes.

When you have thousands of things to answer or do each week, that's allowed. :)

I get the Windows error box every time

Trend Micro  and no I don't run I-tunes.

When I fly I use game booster to reduce the number of processes, but this doesn't seem to have any effect on the ctd's.

Tried this to no avail

I dropped the sound back a notch

Lowering the anti-aliasing down one notch from full, does seem to reduce the frequency of ctd's, but they still happen.

If the CTD's are reduced when yoou drop anti-aliasing, then kill off the shadows and/or bump map options, along with reducing the view distance in the game and see if the game stablizes.

To be able to see in 17 miles, in any direction, takes a lot of resources.
