Mailing a buddy of mine in Afghanistan
« on: March 01, 2012, 04:53:29 PM »
A buddy of mine just left this past Sunday with the 143rd Airborne Regiment (Texas National Guard) for Afghanistan and I'm about to start sending him packages. He wants me to send him dip and things like that, but another friend said that I wouldn't be able to send him dip. So I was just curious if anyone here would know and if not, what should I send him?

Thanks

 :salute

I craved canned tuna and bacon when I was overseas working for Uncle Sam.

Not sure what is allowed now but I did get cans of tuna and canned bacon in a care package from home. That was a great day.

I sent both my sons dip in their care packages while they were in Iraq. Hell I even sent one of them a nice wrist rocket slingshot which I heard ended up being very popular in his unit. Never had any problems. However the last package I sent was in 2007 some things may have changed since then.

All they do is ask what's in the package and how much it cost. They don't check it.

A book, candy, pringles (not bagged chips, the bag will bust), beef jerky, mints, scratch off tickets from the convenience store, with a self addressed envelope to mail the ticket back to you in. Tell him you hope he wins a million bucks. :)  lollipops

You can get a bug zapper tennis racket.  Hours and hours of fun, tons of bugs to kill, and tons of other people to shock (no major damage can be done, just a shock)

Magazines(SI, maxim, etc).  Movies, especially kids movies. Don't get new ones, just buy used ones from the local game/trading store.  Put some twizzlers in with the movies.

Another good thing to send are those chemical heat pouches that they can throw inside their boots.

silly string, a real slinky (metal not plastic), books (run down to 1/2 priced books and spend $10.  It's worth it).  Load up a bunch of music, tv shows, movies, etc, on a cheap flash drive and shoot it over.

There are other things I've *cough* sent but probably NOT a really good idea in retrospect :)

Dip is fine to send but there is a max amount you can send in one package.

Currently Pakistan is being quite rude and taking all of AAFES stuff coming into Afghanistan, Dip and cigs go through air so they have that in abundence at PXs.

5 hour energy drinks are awesome for a heavy patrolling unit because they don't dehydrate you quite as much as a monster of redbull.....I had my mom send me 2 4 packs of redbull a month(I know I know I payed her back :) ) just because I couldn't always get to the PX.(Since I was on a COP)

TxMom has definately done the care package deal before...Pringles are the only chips that will make the journey, beef jerky, cans of tuna, candy like swedish fish or sourpatch kids, and books....movies are easy to get bootleg over here.

Get original Listerine, drain the bottle and fill with Jose Cuervo.  They'll thank you for it.   :devil

I have to ask. Did he bring the slingshot on patrol?
