Good read and I'm glad they found a way to get the gear down so they could land the bird without injury or damage.

While I would never dis Hoover I was taught about yawing and using slipstream to lock the gear down as a 17 year old student.  I'd be rather surprised to find that a guy with enough experience to be giving rides in a Mustang didn't already know that trick.

He probably did know the trick, but because hes trusted and has so much expierence he had one of those "It would never happen to me" mentalities. I don't know the pilot, but I'm sure there are many pilots that do this kind of thing and have that mentality.

he must not have... Though i haven't flown a complex aircraft yet (will be flying an arrow probably next month), I can say that when i was in ground school for my commercial license, which includes flying a complex a/c, i never heard of using that technique though it makes sense.

back in the mid 80's during an airshow, Hoover showed off his 51 and that twin engine plane.  It was a great show and it hand some heart stoppers.  Douglas and Rockwell had shop here at the time.  He did that 18 point roll?
