Inappropriate dumb question
« on: April 11, 2000, 12:23:00 AM »
Who does yer hair??

Ok; question 2: I gotta PII 266, and a good supermicro mobo. Lotsa ram; 770 vid card with 32 megs. This last revison has forced me into bombers.. frame are too low fer furballin. I'm tapped cash wize; the cat needs another operation. (anybody ever see Johnny Dangerously??) Anyway; I digress..

Whats the fastest processor I can plug into my existing board???

Thanks!

Weird, I have a PII 233 + 128MB + TNT 16MB
My frame rate is commonly 30 and I have no prob with furballing. Although at times the framerate does drop some but not so that I can't get myself killed

Telll me exactly what Mobo it is & I'll tell U that !

If it's a SECC (Slot 1) and a BX chipset, I think that if you upgrade your BIOS, you could go up to 600MHZ. Check that you get one in Slot 1 at 100MHZ Bus Speed.

(check if you can flash your Bios, if you can, fastest CPU support will be in the BIOSFLASH text file...)

A barber!

Depends on the chipset used by your motherboard.  BX (100 mhz max bus speed) or LX (66 Mhz max).  With a BX you can run them without overclocking up to 600 Mhz.  An LX tops out for PII's at 333, but can take Celerons as high as 466 without problems.  Note:  A celeron 466 is just as fast as a PII 450 for this game.  In fact, the ONLY difference between a PII and a celeron is cache memory design and standard FSB speed.  Even the Pentium 3 shares the same basic core, code name "Deschutes".  A PII 266 can be of either the Deschutes core (.25 micron process) or the older .35 micron "Klammath" (sp.) core.  (Btw: Klammath cores were easy to overclock.   )  (Coincidently all of Intel's processor cores are named after rivers in Oregon.   )

Does he shave yer back?

SuperMicro P65A AGP. I dunno what chipset. Pretty sure it's LX. As fer the processor, I'm certain the older Klamath core. This thing was hot stuff when it wuz new... 2 years back.

Tell me more about the celeron 466. Sounds like a cheap fast plug in..

I would check out the celron processor, its a shure thing...

(A little biased:  300a running at 450 here)

The  new celrons have clocked over 800mhz at 100 mhz...

Hey Hang, just go to SuperMicro's website and check out the latest Bios upgrade. Their website will give you all the info you need. Whatever size PII it will accept, it will aslo accept a Celery of equivelant speed. You can even get a Slocket converter and put a PPGA model Celery in it I imagine.

Hang, make sure you are in 800 res.  The frame rate is higher than 640 res.  I know, doesn't make much sense, but that's the way it is with TNT cards!  I also have a PII-266,  get about 30 fps in 800 res, dropping to 20 in 640 res with a V550!

Long time since I did my hair!

Use to have a pII 400 and was more or less forced to change it to a celeron 500. (PII and PIII been out of stock as my process. "burnt" up)
I Use  A Asus tnt II and I have seen that my ship moves a bit faster than it use to. Graphic operations goes faster for sure!

I do my own hair!

Please do not tell hang how to improve his computer performance!

He is restriced to bombers.  I personally do not want to see him in a fighter.

Wait!  He shot me down while he was flying a bomber on Sunday.  Ah hell , I guess it makes no difference!

Hang, I have a celery 400 o/ced to 450 with a Viper 550 and run about 32-35 in low furballin.  The prices of these processors have come down alot. If the board can handle it I'd recommend a Celery 400 to 466 processor.   Good Luck and let us know how ya make out!

Another option "not my favourate though" is to shift-F2/F3. Gives you a bit more fps but doesnt look as nice. Sometimes if I am entering a large furball Ill do this just before engaging, then switch back while falling to the ground

Hang,

If your motherboard is an LX chipset then the you probably wont be able to put anything higher than a PII 333.  However as someone else mentioned with a BIOS upgrade you might be able to go higher than that with a celeron.  The celerons went all the way up to 466mhz I believe and that's on a 66mhz bus.  You just have to see what the largest multiplier your motherboard supports.  If it's a 7 then you could put a celeron 466 in, but you should confirm this at the Supermicro web page.

Been using an aopen mb/cerlery 433 oc'd 488, 128 mb ram, voodoo3 3000 16mb card.  In a bx board like mine the bus runs at 66mhz fer the cerlery vs. 100 fer the pentium.  I oc the bus to 75mhz, but thats the most I can get. Runs very stable. Anyway, my point is this, while you certainly get the most bang fer ur buck with the celeron, a 433 is like $90.00 now, the faster bus speeds you can obtain with a pentium do in fact make a noticable difference.  Whether or not the additional cost is worth it is personal preference. If I was gonna build a new 'puter, I'd go with the pentium. I'm gettin between 30 and 60 fps now.  The new ah version definately took away some frames, but hey, it's definately worth it

Hang, I get around 17-32 FPS now, depending if I look forward or at any other angle.  Hasn't really affected my sucky flying at all
What's annoying, is theat 4 point text on a 17" screen that is two feet from my face.    Gotten so I squelch channels 1 & 2 just to not have the headache/distraction.  But HT says they're working on it, so I will sit back and wait for the patch.
