Lackland.  No MOS yet.

He said he wouldn't know till week 8.  Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.  But he sounds a hell of a lot better than he did week 1.

Are you coming down this way Dicho? A hamburger and airplane ride is in order for both you and Squid.

umm .. you can discuss with a recruiter what you would like to do, if there is a demand, you can have your AFSC when you sign up.
(you have to get passing grades in Tech School to keep it, natch)
Some career fields will pay a bonus for enlisting in them (and re-enlisting if a career is decided on)

You can also enlist for 6 years and exit basic as a two striper with 3 stripes awarded at completion of your first year in service..
..provided you don't punch out your CO or some such :)

IMHO .. it is *much* better to get a degree (in anything you enjoy) *then* enlist as an officer candidate.
Much better incentives all across the board.

In any case ..ya gotta do the research ... goin in blind is askin to get screwed.

(ya .. I told my recruiter I wanted to learn how to install speakers in my car
.. he said there was a bonus for goin into ECM (328X3) and if I went for 6 I'd be an NCO in a year.
..I did, got passin grades thru tech school, and I was)

April..

Greyeagle..

TBH... he and I discussed the fact that he was probably going to get screwed and I agree getting your college before enlisting is the best idea.  Unfortunately that wasn't an option available to us so we're making the best of what life has handed us.

All that aside, hearing from him and being able to shoot the bull for even 15 minutes ROCKS!!!!

Aye Dicho .. first two weeks are rough, they push hard and not a whole lotta free time :)

He's in for learnin the true meanin of FUBAR and O-Dark-Thirty :)
Fun day is M-16 Qual .. just plain fun :)

Tech school will be a grind . .it aint high school!

With luck he will earn a yellow rope and be the marcher instead of the march-ee to and from school :)
(got squeaked out once for lettin my troops go on the count so they could be first in line at the chow hall ..LOL .. was *worth* doin tho :)

You do learn to trust in yourself and learn from mistakes, both yours and those around you :)
If he ends up on the flightline he will learn all about bein part of a team to get 'er done :)

Heh.. I live with my phone glued to me these days.  Grey.. you know I don't get a lot of details in our 15 minutes a week.  So far I've got he's in the top percentile of the physical parts but he's still struggling with the folding etc.. He'll get it.  He's smarter and way more self disciplined than his old man.

Pretty cool aside.  Last I hosted his best friends BD party here (no problem they're all my 'adopted kids') and it came out that a bunch of his friends are planning on heading down the only day he gets his off base pass after graduation.

Got to be honest I was both touched and proud.

I couldnt crap for like 4 days. All I ate through basic was the chocolate cake and glass after glass of that wonderful cold milk from those stainless steel cows!
