Can't get windows to install
« on: March 15, 2012, 07:44:33 PM »
The bios shows all the drives and the dvd drive is the boot drive. However it won't boot. Thinking about clearing the cmos and retrying. Then I wonder if I have the right sata cables. I used the white ones and connected them to the white sata ports.

Any ideas?

Usually there is a time frame that you have to boot from DVD/CD. It should count down while waiting for your to hit a key

your keyboard do you have a gaming keyboard or mouse?  it sometimes affects it.  I have to get my old keyboard whenever I reinstall windows as it doesnt detect my gaming keyboard when first install.

and of course make sure your windows cd is already in the drive when you first turn it on.  if it doesnt work then try a different cable for the cd and plug it it in another slot.

You know that may be it. I had to convert my keyboard to fit in a USB port. The screen comes up blank as if the keyboard isn't being detected. Now to find a usb keyboard. Seems they only sell wireless these days.

I've tried the plugging in the dvd into a different sata port but not a different cable.

Which version of windows? Asking as xp doesn't like sata disks much, but you can slipstream it. Look up nLite. You'll also need to know what driver your puter uses for the cd/dvd drive etc.

getback you just got that mobo right? you may have an old bios and that's why it may not recognize your keyboard and some other stuff.

I just looked at the mobo you have and it may have the old bios for sure.  the new bios will recognize gaming/wireless keyboards but the bios that is shipped maybe an old bios.  can you look at it and post which version you have?  if your bios is before 1d then you must borrow a keyboard from somebody.  just a regular usb make sure you plug it in the upper left usb connection in back of your puter.  or the right, i cant remember which one.  if your bios is 1E then you are gonna have lots of problems because it was a mistake to release it as it had way too many bugs.  also do not install it with more than 2  ram sticks as that is one of the problems.

that mobo is great, i have the P67A-GD65 (B3) and I am extremely happy with it.

and btw the keyboards will work in bios but not when trying to install windows.  go figure why.

the dvd should connect to the black sata port.

I have to look to see what version of bios when I get home tonight. But you are right, it recognized it in bios but doesn't seem to when going to install mode.

I'm installing Xp and then upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit.

As long as it is XP with SP1, or later it will work fine with SATA drives.

You should be able to install Windows 7 without installing XP first.

There are methods around the Internet.  (Don't think it's illegal either)

The method is to select the option to enter the code later. Somehow it forgets to ask you in the future.
I just did it last weekend after checking out windows 8 and not liking it.

Had to install xp sp2 and it wouldn't recognise the sata drive, hence finding nlite and having to slipstream it on.

GB, for info, slipstreaming involves creating a boot disc with your xp on it, and a compatible cd/dvd drive inf file. Page here http://www.nliteos.com/ if you need to dig deeper.

What a picky little mb! Turns out it didn't like the PS2 at all! Finally, desperately, connecting the mouse and keyboard to the USB ports. That worked!

Bought a new MS USB Keyboard to help with things. My Compaq keyboard is over 10 years old. I get to the point where it asks you to accept the licensing terms by pressing F8. Guess what key doesn't work on the new keyboard?! The F8 key!! Hmmm, lets try the old keyboard with the new $21 Gigabyte adapter. No stubby little adapters available. Went to Best Buy and Radio Shack twice. That switch kills the download. Reboot and try again. Fortunately that works with the adapter.

Get to thinking I want on the other computer. There's a KVM switch that connects both computers. Well it use to anyway. I figure that I'm not using it so I unplug the KVM's mouse and keyboard from the computer and plug the new Keyboard in along with an old mouse. Well I was using it! It was attached to the monitor. With no mouse and keyboard plugged in there is no power to it. It causes the monitor go blank. What the heck is going. It caused a bit of a pause. Then I realized I had to plug the mouse and keyboard in. That cures that. I sure hit that little switch on the KVM a bunch trying to figure out which computer I was on.

Katansa, wish I knew about that Windows 7 direct install before I started. Would have saved a bunch of time.

yeah the mobo is picky about keyboard and mouse. but it's worth the hassle once you get it going :).

make sure you update the bios to the latest and install all the missing stuff that win7 doesnt install.
