Name that plane.
« on: March 17, 2012, 10:01:24 AM »
At the 4:00 minute mark there's two planes sitting in the desert at China Lake.  One looks to be a Super Saber, but what is the other?  I have a couple ideas but they are both longshots, and the more I look the less sure I become.

The jet is an F84F.  Not sure on the other. Target range stuff I imagine.

Agree, RF84F given the large wingroot intakes and four strakes along the tops of the wings.  The other is a mystery.  It's obviously a twin engine design with straight wings but in a couple of frames it looks like it has two tails while in a couple of others it looks like a single tail.  Given the almost straight leading edge and significant trailing edge taper anyone want to guess F7F?

As for the video itself, it's yet another ridiculous riff on Area 51 starting where they considered it sinister that the control tower at Inyokern (in California, not Nevada) isn't manned and there were no radio communications.  Duhh, the CT was shut down years ago and it's an uncontrolled airfield which, of course, they would know since there's no tower freq listed in the pubs.  They also include all these shots from China Lake which is over a hundred miles from Nellis and imply they're doing something sneaky by flying in "restricted" airspace.  R-2505 (where China Lake is located) is easily crossed, just call Joshua approach.  Same thing is true for a lot of the areas in the Nellis complex, especially on the weekends.  You can fly right up to the edge of R-4808N which is where Groom Lake is located.  Perfectly legal to fly in most of them even if they're listed as "continuous" operation provided you get permission and it's done every day.  Lovely use of the sinister music though...lol.

Yes Mace, the F7F was what I was leaning toward as well.  When I first saw it I sprung wood because I thought it might have been a Mossie.  The engine nacelles stick too far out behind the wing for it to be that, but the nose looks a bit stubby for the F7F, which is why I was asking.

For the record I agree.  My finding that video started out by watching some vids on the Edmund Fitzgerald, and thanks to those little recommended videos on the side 2 hours later I'm watching Area 51 vids.  Damn you Youtube!

I've done the same thing on Youtube and can't believe the stupidity of some people out there.  First, you have the idiots that put the videos together then you have the hoards of idiots commenting on them in agreement.  lol

I don't think either of them is an F-86. The black/grey one appears to have double tail/single boom... I'm thinking maybe a B-25. Just hazarding a guess though.

Nose is way too stubby for a F7f, perhaps an A20 or an A26?

Another very good candidate, the fuselage looks a little long and skinny though.  It would help if we had something not filmed on an etch a sketch, and not sitting on a bombing range where it might very well be all shot up.

Yep, I missed the intakes RF84F it is.

Highly doubt the other is a ww2 bomber.  They cleared out the 29s a while back.  Wing looks big too. Probably moved from Davis M storage to provide a target.  First thought was maybe an old B-57 Canberra

Very hard to tell from the drunken handicam shot... but I am going to say P-70...

The tail... if you can believe the pixelated mess to be one thing over another, does not look like a B25 to me anyway...
