Apparently this is an Alien prequel of some sorts.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
Conceived as a prequel to Scott's 1979 science fiction horror film Alien, rewrites of Spaihts' script by Lindelof developed a separate story that precedes the events of Alien, but which is not directly connected to the films in the Alien franchise. According to Scott, though the film shares "strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak", and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus will explore its own mythology and ideas.

They are clear it is not a prequel, it started as one but they decided to make it it's own universe, so to speak. The only parallels to alien I believe will be that Scott did both

I've been waiting for this.  Thanks for sharing Grizz.

This is a clip of Ridley Scott being interviewed about Prometheus.

Well it is in the same universe.  It is before Alien in that same universe.  Although it is not directly connected to the Alien films it "shares 'strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak'".

Therefore I believe it is safe to say it is--as I stated before-- "an Alien prequel of some sort"

Not really a prequel since the XenoMorphs aren't a part of it, but the space Jockeys are.

I thought that too
