I noticed. these newer cars are like plastic bottles.
 

Oh, they still have plenty of plastic... lots and lots of it!  (ask CAP or somebody who works under the hood of one)  Just it's really a dense car, with a solid frame and everything packed in well (too packed-in if you're somoebody who likes changing a belt or the oil at home).  Some models came with a V6 crammed into it, and now that was some signifigantly added metal mass in the front. 

I used to have a '01 taurus that I really liked and took good care of, or well the Ex had it, she took with her but always neglected listening to the things in her life that were good to her.   :devil  She neglected it, never changing the oil etc., so it (and a couple rods) promptly disowned her on the side of the highway at 3am one morning a few months after she left me.  :cheers:  Good car, even if it deserved a better and full life.

That car is absolutely totaled.  If I'm right and that's an early 2000-something model tarus, the entire power train (engine, transmision, etc.) is shoved back and under (as designed) the rest of the car at least a good foot or two.... bust still... for highway speeds... what'd you connect with, a Fiat?   Somebody had time to try and slow down.

They're designed that way on purpose. The crumple zones absorb the energy of the impact so your body doesn't have to.

Yeah baba, it was an '01 Taurus SES 6 Cyl Flex Fuel.
That Vulcan almost pierced the firewall. xD But no, it's a solid car, what would have been air area (like behind the bumper) was full of styrofoam. It took it like a champ, seeing as how they were going ~75, and on impact right around 55... And I'm wishing it was a fiat... But alas, twas a jeep wrangler. And I think the Taurus won. (:
Thanks for all the prayers. She's still hospitalized, but is being kept there for pain more than anything at this point.
As for me, I'm still beat up. My C Spine is hurtin', along with my ribs on the left. I've got one heck of a concussion. But I'm alive, and that's what counts. ;)
And for the basket... Pretty sure ours is about 20 years old as well. I wish they still sold them. They're fantastic and really sturdy! xD

Jeesh my man. Glad your able to write about it. Prayers definitly sent. I would have a good doc look at your spine though. Get it taken care of immediatly, or you'll regret it later. Trust me.
Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

 they're designed to come apart in a collision. as the vehicle disassembles itself during the collision, that all absorbs energy of the impact. the more it disassembles, the more energy it absorbs, and the less energy the occupants of the vehicle end up absorbing.

Few weeks ago a neighboring town had a 3 car accident, 2 deaths, almost a paraplegic and the same man is flirting with keeping his arm. One death was cause a truck drove over the car (not much saving her even if she wasnt a Dead on impact....), the other car was the right spot wrong time and hit the truck, shoved the engine into the lap of the driver and the medic who worked on him wasnt sure if his legs were coming out with him, complications from the accident are making him flirt with keeping his arm. anywho, the lady who was drove over was in a newer Mazda 3, the man who almost lost his legs was in a early 2000's Dodge Neon. granted, it was vs. a truck, but I can't see how a "softer" vehicle, for lack of a better term, will help. Granted, these speeds were at ~55 MPH a piece, and it was a full size 3/4 ton truck, but te vehicles still crumpled like plastic bottles. even the truck which sat significantly higher then the cars didnt fare well, ~2004 model Ford.

 it can only do so much. generally, when you drive by a collision(remember, they are not accidents), and you see a car, and think "holy crap!! how the hell did those people survive?!" due to the appearance of the wrecked cars......THAT is more than likely why they survived.

 also, a lot of it is dependent on your use of seatbelts(you don't want yourself slamming the dash any more than you'd want a can of soda coming from the back seat and smacking you in the head in that instance), and most of the other safety equipment functioning......

 and example would be the lady in the saturn that hit my mustang head on. i was fine...no airbags, but i had my seatbelt on. she left some blood on the windshield, because although her airbag deployed, she wasn't wearing her seatbelt, thus still allowing injury.

I didnt witness or drive by it, all my info comes through EMS. You are right about the safety devices being properly used.

(same as the one I had, except white, and I don't think it had the flex-fuel feature, but might of).That Vulcan almost pierced the firewall. xD But no, it's a solid car, what would have been air area (like behind the bumper) was full of styrofoam.  (oh yeah!  I remember the rear bumper had styrofoam.  would make sence in the front too) It took it like a champ, seeing as how they were going ~75, and on impact right around 55... And I'm wishing it was a fiat... But alas, twas a jeep wrangler (ouch, thank god it didn't go over your hood in a F/O and that taurus slope-ish nose). And I think the Taurus won. (:  (given it doesn't look like it got deflected, duh.   :devil  I'd guess you had ~1-2 tons over them  :aok )
