LVT's, with tanks or jeeps w/troops
« on: March 21, 2012, 03:24:20 PM »
One more thing and I will hush! Why not be able to launch LVT's with either a sherman tank or jeeps,(2) with troops from the carrier? The U.S. actually did this on a number of invasion maneuvers during the real war, so why not in here. Hats off and a big thumbs up for Hi Tech for providing us with a great game and it is getting better every month!

There were Shermans deployed on D-Day, this would be valid to what you are saying. They were called "DD Tanks", short for duplex drive which were a kind of swimming amphibious tank. What you see wrapped around the tank is canvas, many were sunk due to bullet holes in the canvas. It was a mix of A1 and A2 variant Shermans. However duplex drive tanks are not only Shermans, tanks like the Valentine are also included. I believe that Germany had a DD tank, Tauchpanzer or whatever it's called; it was a test I'm sure. My history book says that during DDay, DD Shermans were used on Sword, Gold, Utah, and Omaha beaches.

Here's a page I found on a DD Sherman.
http://www.battletanks.com/m4_w_dd.htm
Quote
1944 - USA M4A2 Sherman III Duplex Drive
Armament:       1 - 75mm gun
                            2 - 0.3" MG
Engine              2 - GM 6-71 Diesels, 410 hp
Speed;             25 mph
                           4 knots in water
Range:             149 miles

The Sherman was equipped with canvas screens that
were raised to give it buoyancy in water. The tank
was propelled in water by two propellers mounted in
the rear, hence, the term Duplex Drive. They were
used on D-Day and later in the Rhine crossing.

There was another way too, it was the T6 Flotattion Device

Not much is said about it, but I don't think that it was used often.

Most suck because of the waves. They sucked getting ashore. Scary proposition, floating a tank, this from a former 19K...

But heck yeah, lets have it!

Actually, wasn't there a version of the LVT that had the M3/M5 light tank turret with the 37mm on top?  Yeah, it would be nice to have the M4 DD Shermans in the game, it would be change the game a bit.  No more running an M8 or M18 out to the shore and pickin' off LVT's as they spawn in.  The DD Sherman would force a more armored tank to take that role.  :)

paladin the tankers didnt know how to drive a "boat" the turned their ships hoizontal to the waves instead of pushing through them because they kept point to their landing points. they capsized because of inexperience. quite a few british and commonwealth tanks made it ashore

A couple of bullets would just sink them. Assuming the canvas is modeled. Luckily, we have no waves in AH. And with out current water, instead of sinking when the canvas is gone, the tank will just sit there. Hell, screw M8s or M18s, I'll roll a jeep, ping them once, then watch the perks come in.

Surely, a single HMG round through the canvas would spell CURTAINS for the enemy!!!!   :headscratch:

Canvas vs .50cal + water. Gee, wonder what's gonna happen to the canvas. This isn't an amtrac, it's a tank floating on canvas. Enough water gets in and that tank is gonna turn into a sub.

Easy enough fix, not like Duplex Drive were the only M4s used.

The LVT with the 37mm in the turret doesn't need canvass.   :aok

I was asked why jeeps with troops, when your lvt had troops? #1 if you launch the jeeps as soon as you reach shore, the troops will get to the map room a lot quicker! #2 You can maneuver and dodge incoming aircraft a lot better in a jeep than in the LVT!

If their slower than LVTS  -1     the way this game is setup the tanks would almost spawn feet dry anyway  +1

Add amphib groups - then you could drive them in and risk them which is more tactically sound than using a CV the same way - and you could feint, maneuver and such in many more ways than currently.
