the 'clock' was part of the tween wars range finder gear
..it let other ships in the formation know what range that big boy was firing at so they could dial in their guns to support it.

Radar eliminated that entirely :)

One of my little ones just joined the Navy :) He won't leave for a few months though.
I supposed I'll have to brush up on more of this Navy history!

I took it as a dig at modern height-weight/PT standards in the Navy, and well justified. We do have quite a few overweight sailors...
