EVE/Dust 514
« on: March 26, 2012, 10:28:28 AM »
Anyone been paying attention to this game? The first cross platform game (PC/PS3). EVE is a space MMO and Dust 514 is a FPS on PS3 only. From recent show casings, a Dust 514 can call in orbital strikes from EVE, Dust players have to rely on cargo ships brought in from EVE and territory gained is based on both games.

The best part? All of this actually works! They tested 24 v 24 matches, and orbital strikes actually works, as an EVE player fires at coordinates given by Dust players, Dust players can see the strike coming down.

I do not own PS3 nor have I ever played EVE, but this is giving me second thoughts about getting either one.

More excitingly, is that this is PROVEN to work, and I bet every single penny that in the next few years, we're going to see more games like this. I'm going to be keeping a close watch on this, as it's still in development.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

I've tried to "get into" EVE twice now...just can't seem to stick with it for more than two or three weeks. It's real cool, but without anyone I know to play with, and with how much there is to learn and do, it feels more like a job sometimes.

I don't have the time to sink into EVE and I really don't want to make time for it since I have a wife and kids that means I can get outside of work and do something constructive in the real world.

I haven't been paying that close of attention... but does this mean I can just orbit a planet in my Tengu and just lay waste to an entire 24V24 battlefield?

I mean seriously... my Tengu (A cruiser) Lays waste to Battleships in straight up head to head fights.

...
Okay fine so my mission boat might not count on that point too much.  But I do have a Raven that can chuck cruise missles something like 150 Kilometers away and enough cargo space for about 10,000 of them. Even if it's been like 2 years since it's seen a PvP encounter. (freaking stupid lame Torp nerf. I was so happy being able to rip through a capital's tank.)

Please tell me I can just sit in geosynchronous orbit and empty my missile bays at people on the ground and just completely ruin their day.  I like ruining the day of the bunnyhopping Call of Duty trolls. :pray

I don't play EVE but from the video of the test play, the EVE ships can only fire on whatever the Dust 514 player designated. EVE players act as an indirect artillery pretty much.

Been playing EVE since September 2009 and have hit the "hump;" I've pretty much finished training the subcapital skills I want, but can't afford to train capitals (and lack the desire to fly supercapitals). It's vexing to want to find somewhere to fit in to so that I don't lose years of work, and yet I'm slowly losing the will.

As for DUST, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out. They've sunk a lot of time and money into it, and with it being free to play, they NEED to bring people into playing EVE from DUST...especially with CCP's lack of ability to understand the term "microtransaction" ($80 monocle, anybody?). Though considering an order of magnitude more people tuned in to the DUST reveal portion of the Fanfest livestream from their PS3s than currently play EVE Online, that may be a possibility. CCP's habit of dumping out half-finished ideas and letting them sit for years worries me too, but even they can't be that dense, right?

Calling a Tengu a cruiser is like calling the space shuttle a plane. :D

Well... okay fine it's a billion credit cruiser. And the only thing it doesn't beat for mission running is a Nightmare/Machariel which are both a billion credits for the hull alone let alone the fittings.

But it's still a cruiser hull and tangling with my 80 million credit PvP setup 'geddon for thirty seconds would make it a billion credit wreck.
Let alone a decently fitted battlecruiser hull.

As far as finding a place to fit in... A good corporation will keep you happy with this game more than anything else.  I just got back to playing after a long hiatus. (I got tired of the blob warfare crash the server log back on first and shoot the defenseless ships before their logout timer hit.) Now that they've actually fixed that I plan on training up for the rest of the year and build my bank account up and then finding a nice 0.0 alliance to join.  My current plan will have me able to fly every non-capital ship and use every non-capital weapon system in the game.  The longest wait will be the T2 Large arty pieces, since before I left I was a miner/Caldari/Amarr pilot. (Go go railguns/missiles/lasers)

The problem isn't finding a corporation, it's finding something fun to do. :D Just moved out of nullsec myself; tired of strict fitting requirements and getting yelled at constantly. Hoping that a life in highsec with the occasional roam out will fit me better.

Well in that case you may want to look at piracy/anti-piracy.  Usually small-gang warfare stuff, or even check out the Red Vs Blue guys that actually looks like alot of fun.

Go out here and kill these pirates.
Go over here and kill different pirates.
Go here and kill these robots.
Go here and kill these different robots.
Go here and destroy this pirate base.
Go here and destroy this different pirate base.
Go here and kill this robot base.
Go here and kill this other robot base.

...the game is definately 'exciting'.  I gave up after about a month and a half because there was nothing different.  Due to training times, there was nothing to do but wait and run stupid little missions that are the exact same as the last mission.  If you do think you want to try out space combat with other people, the second you gate into a low security sector you're destroyed before your ship has loaded by spawn campers that took their queue straight from Aces High on what 'combat' is.

The game itself is beautiful, but the game play is rediculously tedious and boring.  I won't be giving it another try.

Well, it does take some effort and planning to evade the gate campers. :P It's by no means a game you can get into quickly or do much easily in.
