Kudos to the FO, the other pilot, the flight attendants and the passenger who subdued the captain for averting a potential disaster  :salute

edit: and I hope that the guy will recover from his condition, whatever the cause...

Lots of people condeming the pilot as a bad guy when it's possible that he suffered a mini-stroke, medication mixup, or was dosed by somebody.

The Co-pilot should be promoted to the left seat for keeping his eye on the big picture and acting when he saw something wrong.

It has to be some medical problem. He looks to have a very busy schedule. May have just cracked.

S!@# happens, twigs can snap - seems like the whole crew did their job extremely well, although I wonder what might have happened different (possible hesitations on the FO's part) if there wasn't a spare off-duty on board.

I'm interested to find out what went wrong with him, everyone who knew him at the company seemed pretty shocked at the incident. Icepac has a good list of the possibilities.

In my cargo world there were times where I seriously contemplated belly landing in a field and hitchhiking home after setting the plane on fire. The lack of sleep and daily operating pressure will play tricks on your mind.

Min is 9h consecutive per 24h. 9h from the time you are off duty to on duty again. That means you can go 6 days straight leaving the plane at 9pm and showing back up at 6am. which we do  :bhead

And when I leave at 11pm, after a day at home without sleep, fly 6 hours in 3-4 legs and be done at 8am ... It's legal per FAA. Am I rested and fit for duty? Not really as I keep falling asleep in flight, mind you I have no autopilot nor first officer. The human body doesn't have a on and off switch where you can fall asleep right away and enjoy your 9 hours.

And off course there's the work arounds, like spending 10h in an airliner/airport does not constitute 'rest' even per FAA standards, but as long as you are not on any company flight log, you still pass the FAA duty inspection. :)

Ouch, sounds tough. Pretty weak of your company to give you such crappy fly back times. Nevertheless, what're the hiring mins? I don't shy from hard work.
