I've been enjoying success with recent versions of Aces High on my PcLinuxOs 2011 platform and Wine 1.2.2. I'm using a 3-year-old Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with nVidia G84M [Quadro NVS140M] graphics. Running at 1024x768 resolution with graphics details set mid-range, I'm getting frame rates between 40 and 130 FPS. Configuration was easy: I just downloaded the free Wine 1.2.2 from the PcLinuxOs repository in the usual way and immediately ran Aces High. (Incidentally, I bought this laptop [last year, used] for U.S. $275.00).
When I use this system to run an older version of Aces High (2.12.4), my framerates are 50% higher.
In both cases, I would get a higher framerate with Windows. I think I am getting about a 25% framerate hit by going with the Linux/Wine emulation of windows. Also, I don't hear doppler effects in the audio. Other than those differences, it's fine in my experience and on my hardware. As Skuzzy has said, though, we can't expect HiTech Creations to support this arrangment, and your results might vary considerably from mine, depending on your hardware. As a general rule, I've had pretty good luck with Linux and Wine using nVidia graphics hardware. I've experimented with ATI graphics in these situations and found it a lot more difficult to configure everything for proper performance.
