Vickers Wellington

Vickers WELLINGTON

The Vickers Wellington, affectionately known as the "Wimpy", (after J. Wellington Wimpy, Popeye's friend) was armed with twin .303 in (7.7 mm) machine guns in the nose and tail turrets. It also had 2 manually-operated .303 guns in the beam positions and could carry a 4,500 lb (2,041 kg) bomb load. Its slow speed, limited ceiling, and a small bomb load soon made the Wellington obsolete, although one significant design advantage was famed designer, Sir Barnes-Wallace's geodetic lattice-work fuselage construction. This made the Wimpy extremely tough, and it often survived battle damage, which would have destroyed other aircraft. Its other nickname "The Flying Cigar" alluded to the shape of the fuselage as seen from the profile perspective.

After having early-on proved the inadequacy of the turret fire-power in fending off attacking fighters during daylight attacks, the Wellington went on to build up a great reputation for reliability and ruggedness in night bombing operations. In April 1941, they were the first to drop the deadly "block-buster" bomb, during a raid on Emden, and they helped to initiate the Pathfinder target-indicating tactics.

No Wellingtons were "officially" on RCAF strength in the war, but in fact eleven RCAF bomber squadrons flew the aircraft in the European theatre from 1941 until 1944. A further two RCAF squadrons, Nos 407 and 415, flew Wellingtons on Coastal Command missions. 407 Sqn sank four U-boats with Leigh-light equipped Wellingtons.

Finally a wish that would be valid enough to make it on to the aircraft wishlist, worthy enough.

Its an early war bomber I would like to see, it flew in 1941 and in the Burma theater which is a major plus for me if we get Ki-43s.

Mk III with the quad .303s in the tail would be a good version to add. It was common and, at least in the EWA and settings, would have a fighting chance.

I can't be seen to -1 a Brit plane but   I think that the he-111 and tu-2 / pe2  are more needed as far as bombers go.

Still one day maybe.

A good addition for early-war and mid-war events.

And Wil3ur, that image of a Beef Wellington looks delicious!   :aok

It would be the most logical British bomber to add, no doubt.  The RAF needs a medium bomber for scenarios, etc.

Oh, and the Germans need their He111, too.   :aok

What a joy it would be to have BOTH of these fine bombers introduced in to the game!   :D

I'd love it!

But, as others have said... I would say...

1.  Russian bomber (probably pe2)

2.  German heavy (He-177) Why?  Because it's never been done before! Also, the only real non-allied heavy to speak of...

3.  Wellington  :salute

(Would love to see the Halifax too for that matter...)

H8K2 and P.108...

:huh  Did I just see YOU, the person I would least expect, put the P.108 into a list?

Sorry, I had to take a look outside to see if the sky was falling or not.  It's not.  The ground is still warm, so I can't say Hell froze over either...  Are you feeling okay? :lol :D :noid

As for the Wellington, oh yes...yes, Yes, YES!  +1  I'd fl-...er, die in it in the MA's. :x  But it is true, the Germans are in need of the He-111.  It's a little....off, intercepting the "filler" for the He-111 in a BoB show...that happens to have a 20mm tail gun and catches fire when one of the crewmen wet's themselves.  I swear, the last time I intercepted one, I put my gunsight on one, sneezed, then noticed it was on fire.  I don't recall firing a shot... :noid   I, personally, don't want to leave out the Do-17 either.  Oh I drool at the thought of when it'll be added... :joystick:

And I'll go ahead and say it now, TB-3. :D  Why?  Because unlike some of the wishes we have seen, it actually MEETS the requirements to get added, like the Wellington (even though the Wellington served through out the war and was produced in much greater numbers). :aok  What's kind of sad, the Pe-8 probably stands a better chance of being added than the TBD Devastator... :cry

Volron,

Pointing out that there were other aircraft that potentially could be considered "real" Axis heavies doesn't mean I am advocating for them, just giving a couple of other options.  The fact is that the Axis never had a real heavy to use like the B-17, B-24, B-29, Halifax and Lancaster were used.  We will probably get the He177A-5 at some point, and when we do I really hope it isn't modeled so as to be the best heavy bomber other than the B-29 as that would be a farce in light of its historical faults.  I don't want a special case to be made for it to have mechanical problems modeled, but hopefully it is comparatively fragile and doesn't have a ludicrous bomb load.
