Head Positions
« on: April 05, 2012, 09:09:52 AM »
I wish that the head positions in all aeroplanes would default to the position with the maximum view of airspace around you. I know I can do this myself but it takes a lot of time and trial and error to get there.

The first thing that a new player is often told is to fix the head positions so they can see better.  Why not have an experienced player go through each plane and set this as the default?  You can then make minor adjustments yourself and save them.

This would be easier then the current default positions which I doubt anyone wants to use as is.

Funny that you mention this... I just recently started playing AH again after 10 years+, and in the last few days have really started messing with head position... it is really cool in the JU-88 in fact.

My problem is that in hitting F1 to return to the cockpit, it resets my view.

Is there anything else you can tell me about setting this, as-is?  Is this currently something you have to do manually for every plane, no matter what?

Thanks

You have to hit f10 in each of the 17 or so view directions to save a view and you have to do this for each aeroplane you fly.

The trainers site has a download available,Murdr's headpositions if I recall correctly,it isnt totally up to date as there are several planes not included but it covers most of the planes and will save you several hours of setup time.

 hope that helps!

In your \Aces High\Settings\Planes directory are the (aircraft.hps) files for each aircraft you have adjusted the views and saved with F10. If you have similare cockpits like bubble canopy's or tempest/tiffy, or 109's, Fw's. Zero's, F4U and such you can use the content of a head position file across several planes. Or even try one you like across dissimilar planes. Just save off a copy of all your HPS files to a backup folder. You cannot break anything with these files. Sometimes HTC will tell you to rename your Settings folder and restart the game to produce a first time install state.

I beleive first you will need to save at least one position for each aircraft to generate a head position file. Then copy the contents of a HPS file in which you have everything setup into the HPS file of a fighter you choose over writing whats there. Then spawn on the runway in that fighter and make any additional adjustments. You can edit the HPS files with notepad or write.

At any time you can delete the HPS files to return your cockpit head postions to the first time game install default.

These all do help, but for a new guy who doesn't know how to find murdr's file or wants to manipulate the Aces High directories, why not just have the defaults be more closely aligned with how most experienced pilots have them set?  Seems like it would be easy to do and eliminate the need to manually do things until minor adjustments are needed. :headscratch:

My hps for fighters only... I'm pretty sure I've tweaked all the fighters since I've returned.  I'm all about my views (I use instant views, as if that matters.)

I will note that HTC has gotten much better about the default views being more "pre-set" closer to "optimal."

This has been an immense aid, thank you!!

+1 excellent wish

the learning curve is steep enough for the new guys without handicapping them with much more restrictive views than the vets are using.

Why not? It would help the new guys, and they can just change it later once they find their groove.

Cool....I shall try them.   What is the difference between instant view as you describe?  Is that in the options that says instant or padlock?

Turns your instantly to a view direction, normal view mode takes 0.25 second to turn direction. Most people prefer the 0.25 because it does a better job of keeping your SA orientated.
