Whooping cough is back

with a vengeance. You can thank the folks who don't vaccinate their kids for that. Let's hope noone dies this time.

Did you know that the Center For Disease Control lays out criteria by which people should not be immunized? People that have allergies to poultry, dairy, family history of seizures, etc should NOT be immunized. 95%+ people are safe though there are clearly people that can be harmed by immunizations.

The problem is that for various reasons this information is not widely disseminated. This means that a culture of fear and paranoid concern around immunization has built up, based on elements of truth. Sadly, people who should not be immunized are, and many more who are fine to be immunized are not.

I don't doubt that this whooping cough outbreak is very much related to this culture of fear though the next step of identifying real concerns can only help. Big issue, easy solution, big obstacles to do the most obvious: fully inform the user on do's and don't's.

My two cents.

No offense, but you need to re-examine your sources, Boo.

Actually, I did and fired off a memo citing Fed law, TN statute and CDC report about 4 months ago to a private school in Middle Tennessee that was barring enrollment of a 6-yr old based on failure to immunize. She's happily enrolled now.

I'm confused.  :headscratch: What's the reasoning behind not vaccinating your children?

the fact that people don't want to put that crap in their kids body....immunizations are the virus itself.

I went to a homeschool coop for a year.....full of a bunch of folks who didnt vaccinate their kids. Most of them touted how if you're healthy you will never ever get sick. About a month later chickenpox came through the school and folks my age (late teens) now have permanent scars from it. I didn't get it - I got the shot.

Roll the dice... do or don't. Just live with your choices.

Some don't do well with the shots for most anything. Generally folks with weaker systems.

Ignorance? Sad statement, I think I get your context.

About ten years ago I had a situation where a seemingly healthy 3-year went and got routine shots. Within less then 24-hours the child was in intensive care at the hospital fighting for their life. Spent a couple weeks in the hospital followed by a long recovery at home. When it was all over the parents insist the child is not the same. It was noted that since the mother had both certain allergies and a history of seizures this child never should have been immunized. Settlement out of court, of course.

Is this the situation for all of America? CDC and medical research shows that immunizations are safe for 98%+. If you are part of the less then 2% at risk, big gamble. I suggest a little homework will go a long way. Since most do not put in the research reading of a homeschool group where no one is immunized is not surprising.

In any case...

Sometimes you cannot.

I for example can not receive Hepatitis nor Mumps/Rubella vaccinations because of allergies to it. One of my cousins cannot be vaccinated against several things because she is allergic to some seafood and apparently that is a big time indicator she would react very badly to the vaccines.

Sadly though, most of the people that go un-vaccinated is due to ignorance or because they are too cheap to pay for them.
