gliders
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:05:03 AM »
you should be able to run a glider with either a tank or troops or a couple jeeps in them behind a c47
this was done often in war and could be a good tactic
being able to fly into a area with 5 or 6 c47's a few with tanks in them to drop town and one with a m3 or jeeps you drop the glider let it land the guys drive out and start working
be great for bases with out v spawns too
the other option would be make the trains usefull and make it so you can laod up guys on that for a mission and drop you off anywhere along its track
could also make a new strat of taking out the rail ways that lead to your base

Hmm...  A group of people puts out that they will be upping C-47's with gliders loaded with jeeps + troops/supplies.  The person that joins the C-47, is placed into the Glider, where they release the glider and land.  After they stop on the ground, an option like "Deploy" appears where we would normally see "Load Supplies".  The Glider despawns and in it's place, a jeep which the glider pilot drives appears.  I kind of like this idea, but the coding required sounds like a nightmare.  How would you score the glider sortie?  Maybe gv or bomber?  When the glider touches down then "deploy's" it's jeep, does that mean a successful landing for the glider (unless it lands next to an enemy at which point they get a proxy)?

why is the glider a plane even make it more like the troop drops
and to make it harder thing to accomplish make it so you spawn a c47 and lets say it has one m8 in it or some other light tank or m3 or jeep this would be a load out option once in flight or on the run way someone joins your flight and they become that vehical you release the glider it lands auto style make it like droping a bomb where you pick a point to aim for it and it goes there
the c47 must still return to base but the person in the vehical upon the glider landing simply drives off

right out of history man

gliders were developed to land heavy equipment like anti-tank guns, anti-aircraft guns, small vehicles, such as jeeps, and also light tanks (e.g. the Tetrarch tank). This heavier equipment made otherwise lightly armed paratroop forces a much more capable force. The Soviets also experimented with ways to deliver light tanks by air, including the Antonov A-40, a gliding tank with detachable wings.

light tanks im not talking about droping a tiger into battle im talking m8's or m16's or m3's with cannons on them nothing with a ton of armor

this is just a idea to allow gv battles at bases with no gv spawns or isolated areas on maps that have bases
i don't see it getting used all that often but its a great option kinda like how often a pt boat gets used

honestly the more i look into this having it pulled by a c47 may be the wrong idea but rather by a bomber like the b17 or b29's would be a little more accurate

this may even go along wit the one guy talking about resupply planes as the made a refueling version of gliders now not a whole resupply but if you run outa gas land and have a buddy drag you a glider with fuel so you can get back up and get back to base would be cool and a actaul use that was done

Now how many gliders were ever towed by B-29s?
Far too many, if not most, people on this Board post just to say something opposed to posting when they have something to say.

b 29's did tow the ones that carried smaller tanks and stuff they state larger bombers not exact styles the one style that is listed is  towed by a Handley Page Halifax bomber
agian
four-engined bombers were used, most frequently the Handley Page Halifax
C-47s were usually used as tow aircraft. A few C-46 tugs were used during and after Operation Plunder.
and other things they could recognize to make it harder to use
tow Hamilcars without a drastically reduced fuel load, which in turn narrowed the range of the Hamilca

pretty much when they did this big troop drops anything that could transport troops or pull a glider was used

Not one glider used in the war was able to tow a M-8 Greyhound or an M3.  The only vehicle we have in game that was able to be glider towed is the jeep.
