I had the honor of being family with the best dog EVER.......
Skrappy

Chillin with the kitties, enjoying old age!

Skrappy was a mutt we rescued from a local shelter when he was a pup, and he and his buddy Major (also a rescue mutt) were our first kids. Major passed in '02 from a brain tumor, but old Skrappy lived on to be 14+ years old before he left us last year.
People say a rescue dog is the best pet because they know you're the ones who saved them, and they're loyal and appreciative to the Nth degree, and I believe it. Skrapper was the definition of loyal, and smart.
Our neighbors where we used to live had a black lab named Geech that was old, and hateful, and would bark, snarl, and literally attack the fence between our yards when we would be in the yard with our daughter. Major, the other dog, would of course run to the fence and bark back, but Skrappy did something different - he would immediately run straight to Cailyn, our daughter (who was less than a year old at the time), and get himself between her and the fence, not make a sound, and just stare at Geech with this look on his face like "you're gonna have to kill me to get to this child" - that left an impression on us, for sure. We never had to worry about things when Skrappy was in the house, LOL.
Of course, now that the Skapper is gone, we have a crew of girls in his place....
