My senior year a teacher asked the class who their favorite historical figure was. Some girl said Jack Dawson from the Titanic.

To me It only feels that the generation of the 90's-00's is lacking in intelligence more than generations prior because we are constantly bombarded with stories of people's stupidity through all forms of the media. I'd blame grade school ignorance on the lack of drive to be interested in anything but themselves. The kids i thought were idiots during school just had absolutely no ambition; only cared about achieving immediate and impulsive desires.

While the US education system is far from perfect, it's completely ridiculous to place all of the blame squarely on it.  In spite of it's shortcomings the USA still manages to turn out more then it's fair share of brilliant scientists, engineers, doctors, researchers, historians, etc  and well educated people in general

Learning is a 2 way street, it requires a good teacher AND a good student.  These kids may have had the greatest teacher on the planet, but it wouldn't help them a bit if they don't want to learn.

I think stuff like this is just one of many symptoms of much greater problems that are now plaguing western society as a whole.

I'd love to converse about it, but this is not the place as any conversations on those lines would attract the kind of responses that violate rule 14.

I totally agree with you that it takes a student who wants to learn.
It just seems like our schools have become babysitters.
Also, you're right about it being just one of many problems facing us today.    :old:

Personally, I feel that the biggest issue with Western society is that many kids feel that they're owed a living, and that they don't have to do anything to earn it.

A couple years on a farm would cure most of their symptoms I think.

Many so called adults think the same way.

My youngest daughter was lucky she was singled out in kindergarten for the G.A.T.E. program. She had 2 teachers for 12 students through 6th grade.

The main issues today is that there are folks having kids who have no business having kids.

LOL

I just heard this on Howard Stern..

Sherry Sheppard from the show 'The View' is convinced the world is flat.
I guess she had an argument with Barbara Walters on the subject and her funniest quote

"How do you know the earth is round Barbara, have you been to space to see if it is?"

With media personnel like that no wonder those kids thought that.

Well theres our solution right there; quit providing treatment and care for self-inflicted injuries with stupidity as a primary cause.

We'll kill two birds with one stone: save money and reintroduce natural selection to the human population.
