Bf-109 models
« on: April 16, 2012, 12:16:10 AM »
Can any of the ubber Gustaf drivers provide a basic summary of the various models? What I am looking for is the basic advantages/disadvantages between the various models. I know the F is the best turner, not sure of the Emil. From there I know the G-14 is quite similar to the K-4, both are the heaviest of the 109s.

Which turns best? Which has best zoom/stall? Can flaps help the turn significantly as with the P-51? Do they all have the same compression speed, roughly? Which is best above 25k? 20k? 15k? Best decelaration? etc.

I know numerous threads will have various nuggets of info. just looking for one or two good AH writeups.

Thanks in advance!

before my long absence I had been flying the F quite often. it turns really good and can really stay vertical for a long time. the prop hangs up pretty nicely. i noticed even though it doesnt keep a very fast climb rate for long it offers a good shooting platform in the vertical. it dives alright. overall thought I think its good for low alt turn n burn and cant sometimes out climb an opponent with a better engine. (if you can judge his E better). the single 20mm means you gotta really get close and have pin point aim. i usually go for wingtip and wing root shots at about D200-400. Ive even swatted down a 262 with one.

109s don't have a 'compression speed' like the P-38, that's one of the misconceptions about it.

It does suffer from very heavy elevators at higher speeds but it will respond with trim.

It's something I use to my advantage actually, people frequently dive away from 109s in a more lazy way than they would from other aircraft, thinking that the 109 won't be able to turn with them at higher speeds.

The elevator heaviness does make it hard to turn fight at high speeds, but if you map your elevator trim you'll pull out of a dive with any other aircraft in the game.

This will be very brief and I'm sure rather vague.

Emil turn best but climbs the worst and is the slowest.

K4 is the fastest climbs the best but turns the worst.

Turn Radius order
best E4 > F4 > G2 > G6 > G14 > K4 worst

All 109's suffer heavy control issues upwards of 450mph indicated K key is a 109 pilot's best friend.

Flap work helps alot under 200mph.

On the G14 and K4 it's best to reduce throttle for rolling right - for the torque.

It's very difficult to compare the whole range, but upwards of 18k the K4 outclasses the other 109's overall in climb and speed.

The G2 is the jack of all trades.

The Freidrich is Fantastisch Shameless Plug

But by far the most fun and difficult to kill is the Emil Shameless Plug

109F is my favorite. Feels really nimble and quick. Anemic gun package though.

Here's the 109F video that first got me interested in 109s:

Boo,

all the 109s are vertical fighters. Yes, a 109F will turn like a spit 16, and so will the g2, but they must be put into context and a spit5 will out turn both of them.

Traits that 109s have
1) Excellent climbers
2) Excellent at changing 'e' state (accelerate quickly, slow down quickly)
3) G14/K4 have a powerful gun which change the way you think about fights.
4) Excellent yaw characteristics
5) G14/k4 have enormous torque and can be used to do some crazy post stall moves

Advice...
* Don't do flat turns, always look for a way to cut the turn, either by slicing upward or slicing downward.
* Exploit the ability it has to change 'e' states to get the other guy to give you a crossing shot (esp in k4/g14)
* Many 'tricks' can be achieved due to the torque of the engine and the yaw ability
              - yaw when below stall speed
              - stomping on the rudder to keep the nose up, and even falling on one wing tip
              - below 200 (preferably closer 100), rolling, then stomping on the rudder combined with gunning the throttle followed by pulling it back and back on again, will cause the nose to pop up, followed by the plane flopping upside down and yawing, followed by the nose suddenly dropping.
              - at the top of a rolling scissors, one can get well below stall speed and use the engine to 'drag' the nose back down
              - with some practice one can do huge tail slides (falling backwards on the tail) and then be able to recover.
              - very nice wing-overs, although the p51 does one to the left easier and cleaner.

TIP: go into the TA and fly through the hanger, then pull straight up and at the top try to do a 'move', then recover and then fly though the same hanger and repeat. If you do it right you can do it so that when you recover your lift vector is pointing the same direction it was when you were climbing, essentially doing a 180 in direction at the top.

Yeah, that's right, you just got your rear handed to you by a fuggly puppet!
