i miss my a26
« on: April 17, 2012, 10:42:33 AM »
who remembers the a26 invader on airwarrior?  that was fun ride!  what i love the most was how it taught you to manage your e 'cause you always want the bogies to come up to you.  i love how it suckered so many people into turn fights when they can bnz me to death.  with its limitless ammo (i've never ran out) it was not uncommon to rtb with well over 10 kills a mission (i think 28 was my record.)

i credit -nm- and -cl- of the shills who taught me the finer points of the a26.

i don't care what people say about aw, THAT WAS ONE FUN GAME!

Just don't try to turn fight with it when it gets added to AH, you'll get your tush handed to you.  The A-26 had very high wing loading compared to almost all other WWII aircraft.

Air Warrior was around just as long as AH has been.  It had a good run, starting in the late '80s and ending in early 2000's.

What Rino said.  AH and WB were a generation ahead of AW in physical modeling at the time.  But in the perspective of the niche market of these kinds of games, subscribership was not a problem.  They had the misfortune of being snapped up by a company that deals with way bigger markets, trying waaaaaaaaaaay to late in the game to jump on a .com bubble.

My point.

Whose decision was that?

I flew the Vader almost exclusively in FR MacAW... never got as many kills in it like you did (maybe two max. in a single flight without a gunner) but it was a major fun ride. I remember taking up a couple of people every now and again for a gunned mission. That was definitely good for a laugh. I took it up once in the PAC with "AceWing" gunning and we went up and down the canyons in the center atoll auguring and pinging everything in our way left and right... an oil hit made us leave early and we ditched on an outlying island. In all the fights in all the sims in nearly twenty years that is the one fight I still remember as the best. We got a good few kills, "AceWing" was hooked on flight-sims forever 'cos he got kills in slow motion as we'd zoom up, hang on the props and the bad guys would try to stay with us. I nearly died laughing at their antics when they realised the Vader was gunned and those bangs on the fuselage were unfriendly. "AceWing" only had a mouse and I only had a CH Pro joystick at the time and we thought we were sierra hotel. Hahaha! Fun times...

Usually on most nights I'd get up in one and head "Up North" (being a Bzer mostly) out to the left or right of the Pond... hit a base, blast a few drones so the kill messages showed up on the main channel then sure enough someone would take up a P38 or a 109 and climb up to me while I watched them. Hahaha! The ole Vader never ran out of ammo and the lethality was always up there.

Reading up on it back then to find out its history amazed me. Not many WWII aircraft made the list as viable in the 1960s but the good old Vader kept going on and on...

On another note... there was a famous film of HiTech flying the Vader in AW which was one of the first AW films archived online on a "training academy" website (memory fading a bit) and it was one of the first films I downloaded and watched in the 1990s. If I remember right... he lands a few kills in it. Good motivational movie. :-)

cheers
