Stress testing CPU

I just OC'd my E-8500 to 3.8, I'm using this cooler which some say isn't the best but I got it for almost nothing and figure it's better than stock http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181012

It seems to run fine but now I'm wondering if I should stress test it, and what utilities do people use.

If I'm doing an overnight test, do any have a monitor and shutdown feature so I don't burn it up?

which video card are you using?  you need to match both.  I could get 3.8 easily on mine but I had a really good cooler.  but always felt safer at 3.6 since that matched closer to my video card.

Prime 95 is good for testing cpu or cpu and ram combination. I have used the software, but I usually don't do overnight test. 3 to 6 hours is what I do do. Your bios may have temp alarm and or shutdown.

There are other utilities as mentioned above.

Going back to overnight test for myself. I do not do them because
 I think its a waste of energy, hard use on puter, and if monitoring software not working correct or something goes wrong the stress could cause permenant damge to PC.

I use ATItool for stressing GPU, old copy of Everest for CPU.

I never stop monitoring a machine while its being stressed, let alone leave it running overnight unwatched. if the stress test does bring up an issue I want to be able to stop the test and try and save the machine before it frys something.

Neither is using a cheapo PSU and yet its very likely that 80% of the users in AH (probably more) are guilty of that. Its more likely 99% of all computer users so in this group we are doing pretty good.

I have a 4 year old PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W PSU.    Still rock solid.   <shrug>.

I use Prime95.  Run the small fft test through two cycles and you should be good to go if there aren't any problems.  I'd monitor it while it's running.

What is a cycle composed of?   One test?  The dozen or so tests before it switches test types?
