P-51C
« on: April 26, 2012, 07:24:15 PM »

I LOVE THE BIRD CAGE!!!

P-51B and P-51C (Mustang III): These were the first models to be fitted with the Merlin engine and four-bladed propeller. The original conversion was made in Great Britain by Rolls Royce by the installation of the Merlin 61 engine in the Mustang II. The success of the conversion was such that steps were immediately taken by North American to redesign the P-51 to take the 1,520 hp Packard V-1650-3 (Packard built Merlin 68 with two-stage supercharger and aftercooler) which was at that time going into production in the United States. The airframe was strengthened to take the new engine, the radiator installation was redesigned, new ailerons were installed and streamline racks for long-range fuel tanks or two 500-lb bombs were added under the wings. The bomb load was later increased to two 1000-lb bombs. The new design was originally given the designation XP-78 but this was later changed to P-51B. The P-51B and P-51C were put into production in 1943, the P-51C at North American's Dallas plant and the P-51B at the Inglewood plant.

The first Merlin-engine Mustangs were delivered to the 354th Fighter Group of the 9th Air Force in Great Britain on December 1, 1943. The P-51B first went into action as a fighter on December 17, 1943 and on January 15, 1944 P-51Bs with drop tanks made their first long-range mission as fighter escort to heavy bombers of the 8th Air Force over Germany. A modification which had no bearing on the designation was the introduction of the "Malcolm Hood", a backward-sliding bubble canopy intended to improve visibility on a variety of P-51B, P-51C and F-6A models. This modification was first undertaken by the RAF, but was subsequently adopted by the USAAF as well.

The P-51C is the same as the P-51B, just built in Texas instead of California.

And that makes a P51C a much better airplane.

As soon as I posted my reply, I knew it was just a matter of time before someone pointed that part out.  :)

No production P-51C came ever close to that speed, they either have a special modified version or the specs are faulty. They should also learn to use 0 (zero) and not O in their specsheet.

So then saying "I'd like a P51B/C with the bird cage canopy" to go with the P51B/C with the Malcom hood would make more sense.

I wouldn't mind that for the more accurate look historically for some of the skins of 51B/Cs that didn't have the Malcom such as Gentile's "Shangri La" and any of the PTO B/C or MTO B/C Mustangs

Of course I do! Do you how much that enforced it's turning radius? Quite a bit! I haven't seen any proof though. However I spoke to a pony pilot who flew in the West Front, he flew the B/C then the D. He said the B/C with bird cages turned like they were on rails. I believe this relates to the P-47D-11 (I am going to wish for a D-22 in the future). However if anybody can find valid sources congrats.

Did he ever fly a B/C with the Malcolm Hood?  If not, what is your basis for claiming different handling for the two?

Personally I don't believe there will be a significant performance difference between the bird cage and Malcolm Hood P-51B/C.  The best way to add this would probably be to have duplicate gun packages that change the cockpit framing the way one choice makes the B-25C a solid nosed version.  Not sure that AH is setup for it right now though.
