F4U-1 vs. F4U-1a
« on: April 27, 2012, 07:52:58 AM »
Guys,

Other than the visibility, what do you see as the major differences in ACM between the F4U-1 and the F4U-1a?

Thanks,

-1 Seems to float much better.  It is a great one to earn perks and surprise spit and ki/zeke/nik pilots as well.

Anecdotally, it seems the 1A is slightly faster than the -1. but the -1 does seem to scissor a shade better. But 1A has better acceleration for sure, not that that's saying much when we're talking about Corsairs. Except for the -4 that is.

You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

The 1A is faster, accelerates better, and climbs better than the birdcage.

The birdcage is just a sexier bird.

Flew the bird cage in a scenario a while back, against the Ki-61 and A6m3 and I wished we had the 1a, seems like a totally different aircraft, in terms of performance.

For some odd reason I find the 1D the most stable platform of all the corsairs besides dash 4.

you are not alone in that, a lot of people (and good pilots) find the D preferable stating stability and a more gentl stall as thir reasons.  I think it is similar to the G2 and G6 109 relationship, but with less difference in performance.

I prefer the -1A to all of them aside from the -4. I only use the -1D when I need to put ords on a target but would rather dogfight in the -1A.

Indeed.  I don't know why people think the -1D is better than the -1A maybe because they see it is a later version?  I think the 1A is better on all counts then the 1D.

the difference between the 1A and 1D iirc is just the gas tanks and the ordinance

To me, the -1 and the -1A handle pretty much the same, except the -1A is faster and climbs better.  The -1 does seem to "float" better, and I think it has a slightly better turn radius.  I prefer the -1A
