Testing Memory with Memtest86+
« on: May 03, 2012, 04:47:40 AM »
Hi Guys,

Just want to mention this excellent app for anyone who think they might have memory related problem. I was having frequent crashes to blue screen on a 1 yr old system after much diagnosis, updates, clean ups and all usual steps ran this from boot CD as per instructions and after a 4 hour test it hit errors. Checked each 1gb stick individually and eventually isolated the one causing errors, installed good sticks and all is well ever since.

Anyway thought I would post in case someone now or future comes up with similar problem and this post might help.

Yup, that's a good one for tracking down flaky RAM.  :aok

A wife.  It will quickly point out everything that is 'wrong' with you.

Wife 1.0 is still pretty buggy.  It occasionally will hang in an endless loop of 'told ya so', completely aborts for one week each month, cannot be completely removed from the system, and will take over your system only allowing you to do what you want to do on rare occasion.

wife 1.0 can be removed but it removes half your stuff with it.

To salvage any part of your stuff, you need to use Attorney 1.0 to eradicate Wife 1.0.  However, that can be a long and costly process due to all the plugins required, which are not free.  Another option is Hitman 1.0.  Quick and efficient, but can cause all stuff to be locked away for a lifetime.

Personally, I had to go through three complete updates to Wife 1.0, before I finally got a stable version.

I was unaware that a stable version existed.

Like most computer related programs today, it probably depends more on the computer configuration than anything else.

if all fails, there's always girifriend1.1, but that can be almost as flaky as wife1.0. the problem is if wife1.0 should detect girlfriend1.1, the corruption  will be so bad, you'll need lawyer1.0 to rebuilt or may be forced to turn girlfriend 1.1 into wife2.0 and totally delete wife1.0

it could get very complicated!

However you could always stick with girlfriend0.9 which was the last beta option before they went to girlfriend1.1; was a much nicer GUI and very receptive to immediate interaction. However it also needed to be reinstalled every 4-12 months and still had some of the hangups of girlfriend1.1 and wife1.0. Unless you opted to test some of the benefits that allowed continuous operation for 60-90 days before needing a reboot and rebuild of the kernel for a week and then you were golden for another 60-90 days.

You just have to be very careful of those, so called, "free trials".  They have been known to cost a lot of money for even trying them once.
