New experience.
« on: May 06, 2012, 12:49:39 PM »
So I'm flying my Cessna 170 back from Oklahoma to Georgia and I'm stopping in Bessemer AL for fuel. A pattern call comes over the radio for "Mustang" turning downwind. As it turns out there is a P-51 in the pattern. He does a low pass over the runway as I'm setting up for the downwind. And gets in a breaking turn and gets in the downwind again before I can get there. So I follow the P-51 in to a full stop (first time I've shared the pattern with a warbird). He uses the whole runway and I use a third and then he taxies back crossing my path as I wait. I call over the radio "That's a nice plane you got there." He calls back "Yours looks pretty good too. It's a real airplane with the wheel in the back." I thanked him and offered an even trade. Can't figure out why he didn't go for it. He never said no though.

Still riding the ego boost for a mustang pilot complimenting my old Cessna.

Since his landing speed is faster than my cruising speed, it would've been something like a Stuka vs a 262. Of course he would've tried for the HO shot and augered. Not much of a fight. ;)

Perhaps he was weighing the fuel-cost/difference factor before deciding?
