It is the Bessemer Airport just outside of Birmingham, AL; its code is EKY. There are lots of old warbird trainers that are stored there and may still have a Skyraider there but it is under lock and key because it may have been brought into the US illegally. No idea right now if that is still the case.

Lilmak...There are a couple of P-51s that come through here frequently and I think there is one that is stored there. There are some other planes there like the Soviet Yak trainers and I think an L-39 used to be stored there as well by the same guy that owns the Yak trainers.

One of my Co-Workers flies into Bessemer when he goes to visit his son.  I grew up in the Albertville/Boaz area.  My wife is from Moundville.

Where did you go to high school Gaidin? When did you graduate? My grandparents live in the Albertville area and my grandmother taught math at Albertville High School. My mom is from that area as well but I grew up down between Marion and Selma.

A few years ago when I had the funds I did a few hours towards my PPL in a Piper WarriorII. On about my fourth hour and doing gentle banks and trimming routines we were just heading back to land. Anyway, there was an air display at a local country park, and the tower staff at the little airport asked for a flypast. So they held us circling at 3000ft whilst the Red Arrows flew underneath us and over the tower in a diamond with smoke on.

Even the crusty old instructor with about a million hours was grinning and speculating how many other people had watched the Red Arrows from above

I went to Douglas HS until I was in the 11th grade and quit.  My mom worked for Kendall (changed to Tyco in the 90s) for about 14 years.  Spent much of my time on the lake in Guntersville and the Outlets in Boaz.  Ate lots of food at the BeeGee's, wonder if thats still there.

I did go to Alberville HS for half the year in the 9th grade, then my mom moved us to Douglas, about 10 miles away.  I lived in a trailor right behind the school and had an after school and weekend job at the small BBQ place there in town, cant remember the name of it.

After I quit school, I went to the CC in Boaz and got my GED, took the ACT and then went to Job Corps in Gadsden.  Went to Gadsden CC while I was there and then joined the Army in '97.

Perhaps he was weighing the fuel-cost/difference factor before deciding?

 :D
True! Current fuel price @ EKY $6.09/gal.

P-51 fuel burn @ 25k 395mph cruise = 85gal/hour
$517.65 per hour.

C-170 fuel burn @ 5k 115mph cruise = 8.5gal/hour
$51.77 per hour.

The true question is...Is a P-51 ten times more fun than a Cessna 170?

The answer...HELL YEA!!!!
