cant log in
« on: May 18, 2012, 07:30:38 PM »
I am a long time player, 10 years or so.  I know my computer is old too, but I can not log in on a regular basis.  When I log in, everything is fine until the arena and map pops up, then I get host connection lost and UDP switch.

It can take me up to an hour or more to log in successfully.  Its like I need to to put a squeak slap on my puter to wake the heck up, But it takes hours just to log in.  Its driving me bat sheet crazy guys.

I almost want to erase my drive completely and start over again.

plz help

Signed, trying to log in

A couple things to try and diagnose the problem.

You said your computer is old, run a dxdiag and post the top third of it here, up to AND INCLUDING <SOUND DEVICES>  <--- it will look like that. If your computer is too old and slow to load up graphics it can time out and you will lose connection. With the dxdiag, tell us what settings your trying to run in the game, under "video settings" when the game first loads up, whats the "texture size"? In the game, home much eye candy are you trying to run?

Connection issue could be your internet too. I know you drive truck, are you trying to connect on a wireless connection? Wireless is the worst, right up there with satellite. Even dial-up is far better than those two. To check your connection, download and install "pingplotter"( http://www.pingplotter.com/downloads/pngplt_1.exe ) Once installed, type this address 206.16.60.41 into the box at the top left and run the ping for 10 minutes letting it ping every few seconds. Take a screen shot (hit print screen on keyboard) and open it with windows paint. Save the picture and post it here. What your looking for is everything in the green. If you have stuff showing red your connection stinks.

With that info, we might be able to help you tweak things to get it running better. I have tomorrow free and hope to be flying by 2 pm eastern. Maybe we can hook up.

holy cow!!! for one thing, max texture size is too big for that video card. copy and paste just the dxdiag sections from system information through sound devices. you don't need the entire dxdiag output.

yikes, barely enough memory to run windows and that video card isn't directx 9 compatible. he should start by setting texture size to 128 and turn off detailed everything...then add a little here and there to see how the system handles it.

I do not see anyway for the game to be stable on that computer.  Even at the lowest detail settings possible, the lack of system RAM alone is going to be a problem, not to mention the lack of video RAM.

It is quite difficult to get the game to run on any video card with less than 256MB of video RAM.

Yeah jeez dude! My last PC was a P4 with an AGP video card. Mine had a 3.4 ghz CPU and the last of the mohicans AGP card that had 1Gb of memory on it and I had that overclocked too. It was the best of the best of the best--for like 2006. Problem was it was 2010 and mine wasn't cuttin it then. And as far as AH is now that was not only several patches ago but at least one graphics upgrade ago. Yours is several steps below what I had. No shot that's doing this with everything eye candy-wise pretty much turned off.

I fought it as long as I could and had no choice but to start over. You're there now.

Thanks everyone.  -S-

Been away for some time now and haven't kept up with system requirements.  Looks like its time for a new machine huh.

What do you guys do to dispose of old computers, safely?

Thx again.

Depend where you live - some major metorpolitan areas have organized bi-annual hazardous waste drives/drop-offs, and they'll take electronic waste free.  Some independent electronics/computer repair places will take it for free.  Some large churches or NPOs have electronic waste drives too, check with your favorites if you have any.  I've never had to pay anybody for disposing of my electronic waste (because usualy they make a nickle or dime off it).
