About to receive a GTX 590
« on: May 20, 2012, 08:12:51 AM »
A really really amazingly awesome friend sent me his GTX 590 for free, and I can't wait. But my current PSU cannot run it (realgood also sent a 400W to me 1 month ago but I had no idea I would be gifted with a 590, 1 month later). So, I need to find a PSU that'll run the GTX 590. Charts says peak load for the card itself is ~350W. So I figured a 600W or better would run everything fine.

Core2Duo 2.9Ghz
4GB Ram
Radeon 5570 (right now)
1 HDD
1 dVD/CD player

And this was running on a 220W PSU before. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good PSU? I'd like to keep it under 90$ if possible.

Yup, that.

Also, im afraid that core2duo and the 4GB RAM will be a pretty bad bottleneck for that card. If you got some money for this, would be great if you could build an i5 system with 8 gigs of RAM, that could use your new monster's full potential. Also its a great card to run a triple head setup.

Congrats btw  :aok

I know, and I'm afraid of in-game stutters due to the bottleneck, but we'll see. I crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Even if my PC can only utilize even 1/3 of the 590, it'll still be 5x faster than my current 5570.

Oh and also, I don't want to start another thread, so:

How easy is it to replace a CPU on a craptastic Dell motherboard? If you can at all?

One more, my MB only has a single PCIEx16 2.0 slot. Will that affect the 590 in any way?

Depends.   More than likely you will have to upgrade the PSU and find one that will be the proper dimensions.

replacing the cpu isn't real difficult. the heatsink will be a bit tough due to the mounting bracket but, the cpu is in a standard socket. just make sure your replacement cpu fits the socket properly.

come to think of it, that 590 is a pretty long card, do you have a full size dell case or a slim line?

Yes, full sized Dell. I have plenty of room, my 5570 is about half the size of the GTX (6.7" vs 11") and it still has plenty of room to spare.

Be caureful about the motherboard if you replace it... Dont know about the new full tower dells.... but I've seen some recent XPS Studios with a funky shaped motherboard that kids brought in to have work done on....

the lone PCI Express shouldnt be an issue, if you ever want to SLI it though, you will need to get an ATX.

About the PSU, if its a newer Dell it should have a standard ATX PSU, but if its any older then a few years youll want to double check that its an ATX and not one of Dells funky long, full case 2.5" thick PSU (if they make them still).

Someone criticize if I'm wrong,  as I dont know when Dell switched their PSU's to the ATX standard, as well the boards.

Hey Gyrene you old fart.  Don't give him to much advice.  His system will end up better than mine.  He already hands me my butt with and inferior system.

The Dell originally had a 220W PSU that I replaced a month ago (due to a generous offer from realgood) with a 400W Diabolitek because I was planning on buying a Radeon 6770. I had no idea that I would be gifted a GTX 590 a month later. So if the 400W Diabolitek fits and works in my case, then I think any other brand should too, right? All the PSUs are the same sizes right?

My motherboard however is some un named brand which originally had a G41 chipset. I replaced it with a Radeon 5570 (only card that could run on a 220W) about 2 years ago.

No they are not all the same.    You will need a MINIMUM of a 700w PSU for a GTX 590.

Dimension examples:

Diablotek DA Series PSDA400 - 5.8" x 6" x 3.5" (have no clue on whether or not this is your model)
Diablotek ZR Series ZR400     - 5.8" x 6" x 3.5" (Diablotek seems to be somewhat proprietary in their dimensions around this Wattage)

SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W - 6.3" x 5.9" x 3.4"   (Just an example)

It might not seem like much, but a 1/2" of width/length can make it or break it when using a Dell case.   Just make sure you measure correctly, before purchasing your PSU.

I looked at the dimensions and they are almost the exact same (off by .1" or .2"), and I still have plenty of space in my case for it. Thanks for the heads up though.

AFAIK most PSU's fit into the standard slot. Minor differences in dimensions don't mean a thing as long as the screw holes match. If there's a 5" facing inside the cabinet, the bottom has to be about 6*6 for the fan to fit, most cabinets are at least 7" wide.

BUT then again, some brand manufacturers have used strangely formed PSU's in otherwise standard looking boxes. Compaq for example has equipped some towers with a PSU which was narrower but higher than the standard model, also they used to have a small tower with a mini PSU with a bracket to fit into the normal hole. Then there used to be short PSU's fitting the standard hole. It seems custom dimensions are dropping off, though, seen only in those minimized multimedia computers.

The normal screw hole placing is asymmetric: Looked from behind the upper left hole is about one inch to the right, the upper right one is one inch down and the lower ones in the corners.

:aok I settled on this but the 750W instead after I found a promo code that was the same price as the 650W. Everything should arrive by Monday, I'm hyped!  :rock
