Hatfields & McCoys
« on: May 30, 2012, 06:03:42 PM »
Anyone watching this on History? It's actually pretty good if you record it on DVR and fast forward thru the commercials. I was surprised at the amount of violence they are showing.

The story they tell is interesting.. seems like the McCoys just cant leave the Hatfields alone.
I'd say leavin a lost cause was a good choice (last days of the Confederacy) ..
..the way they tell the story the McCoy dood comes across as a total handsomehunk bent on blaming Hatfield for all he went thru.

Then another McCoy turns out to be a sleaze-bag lawyer
and the two of them together just set the paradigm for why in-breeding is a bad idea.

Not sayin it isn't a great story
It is interesting to watch the story unfold from 'the outside' ..not being a Hatfield or McCoy.

.. sad fact is I have relatives who could teach them a thing or two about hate and discontent lookin for a place to happen.

And .. they all live in Virginia. (!!)

Been watching it.  I normally can't stand Kevin Costner, but he isn't bad in this film.

Wow...

“The Hatfields and McCoys mini-series attracted a monster audience Monday night of 13.9 million viewers, the second largest ever for a cable program that didn’t involve sports!” The president of the History Channel, Nancy Dubuc was quoted in a New York Times article as saying she would have been happy with three million viewers.

Been good so far. Will watch episode 3 later tonight and see how it ends. I wonder how accurate it is though. Having never read anything about the feud, I can only speculate how much of it is just Hollywood style embellishment. And we all know how much the HISTORY CHANNEL cares about history.

I enjoyed it as well, watching 3rd episode on DVR tonight.

I was surprised about the depth of the hatred as GE mentioned, Had no idea about their service in the Confederacy together.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Maybe she will see that there is value in quality programming and tone down the ever growing stream of "reality" garbage.

I'm pretty sure having a quality cast made a difference. Kevin Costner, Bill Paxton, Mare Winningham, Powers Boothe, Tom Berenger. That's an expensive payroll. The production vales were first rate and the writing was excellent. This looked more like a long theatrical film that got chopped into a mini series. Hopefully we'll see more of that in the future.

An article in the Lexington Herald Leader said that the mini-series was based mostly (heavily) on a biographical writing of the feud, with as accurate information as possible dug up to make the story what it truly was. Although, for obvious reasons, some romance scenes and affairs and such had to be tweaked to make it more enticing to audiences. From what I can recall, it was actually a VERY accurate miniseries on the affair.

...and the two of them together just set the paradigm for why in-breeding is a bad idea.

FYI, the Hatfields and McCoys were not inbred. Inbreeding by the time this was around was was declining HEAVILY, and had occurred MOSTLY in areas of more southern Appalachia, (As in lower KY, lower WV, Virginia, NW SC, Eastern Tenn, etc) where it was rare to see anybody BUT family, and travel took eons. The hills around the Big Sandy River (the smallest river to create one of Kentucky's borders, and the river that creates the WV, KY border) are smaller than those further south towards Georgia or further north towards Pennsylvania, and are not as expansive; thus, this problem, although prevalent, was not as severe as in other places. Edit: if you want a cool read on the subject, though, look up the blue people of Kentucky.

Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed the series, and I liked the attention to historical detail (blanket rolls, trapdoor rifles, cabin styles, clothes, etc). I hope they make something like it again. Great miniseries.

I would like to throw in the possibility that the whole feud thing between the two families may have been a cover up. I think the inbreeding kicked in so much that both families got so dumb that they started holding their guns wrong way and many begin shooting thereselves.

Took me a while to catch Tom Berenger, I was looking for Sgt Barnes.
