You didn't say if it's a desktop or a laptop... I've heard and seen Acer laptops do less funny things when the battery is beginning to die. The one I once had lost all networking components when the battery was attached, but worked flawlessly without the battery. And of course with the new battery as well... A fellow had one with a battery that still could run the laptop about an hour, but caused troubles. So, if it's an Acer laptop you're having problems with, remove the battery and run it on mains only to see if your problems still exist.
