System Advice
« on: June 06, 2012, 04:23:11 PM »
Hey all,

I was hoping to get some advice from the experts out there about a new system.  With my old system, I wasn't getting the full graphic detail on the sheep I was looking for, so I stopped playing a couple years ago.  Here's the system that I found and I was wondering if I could get some advice on how it would perform in AH and/or if any of this is bs.

CPU: Intel i7 920 1366 socket CPU - Clocked to 4.2ghz stable

Motherboard: Asus Rampage II Extreme - Latest Bios - NB/SB thermal paste replaced with Shin-etsu for cooler temps.

RAM: 12Gb (3x4gb) Corsair Dominator Triple Channel DDR3 1600mhz

HDD: 2 x 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD's in RAID - 0 striped.

Video: 2 x Asus GTX 580 DCII Video cards in SLI. These are the three slot cards with the enhanced cooling for great overclocking potential.

Case: Antec 1200 Full tower case - Modded for wire management and cooling. Modified for installing H100 CPU cooler + push/pull fans.

CPU Cooling: Corsair H100 Liquid cooler, modified for push-pull fans on radiator with 4x Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 fans. These are the best you can get and expensive. The CPU also has Indigo Xtreme liquid metal as the thermal paste/TIM material for the best in the industry thermal transfer. CPU Hits about 65c at full load overclocked, and this is a C0 revision CPU, so those temps are amazing.

Sound: PCI-E Sound Blaster Fatality Titanium X-FI, no poor onboard sound, only the best.

PSU: Corsair HX-850 Gold Certified power supply.

Misc: Quality extension cabling for amazing looks inside the system and great wire management, this is a slick looking system.

OS: System will come with fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit and drivers/system optimized plus CD key certificate so you know you are getting a legit copy of Windows.

You might want to get in touch with TilDeath, before you lay down too much cash.  I'm saving up myself in hopes that he has time to throw something together.

I truely hope that the HDD has more then the 120gb OCZ Vertexs... depending what you do you wont have much space. the OS hogs up something like 20 gigs, after what the manufacturer takes that leaves you with ~210 or 215 gigs give or take. you could squeeze things on there with ease, but if you do videos it will gobble up that space rather quick.

You cannot SLI those 580s on that MB but in reality you only need one to accomplish the same thing. Get a Seasonic PSU and at least one non-SSD HD. I would get two and True Image the installation.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

sounds like a used system. socket 1366 is old, won't be able to put a newer cpu on it. power supply is good.

personally, what you're getting ready to pay for that thing is going to be too much and you could build a monster system with more up to date components for the same price.

Socket 1366 is only discontinued how long ago? Just bought a brand new Gigabyte board for my i7-970 back January time. Granted, its old and discontinued, but drivers can still be found with ease. Theyll suffice for now if thats what he wants, does the job and is in his price range.

Personally, if I were building a new box, I'd pick the i7-3770K Ivy Bridge CPU: built with the Sandy Bridge architecture on Intel's newest 22nm silicon.  With the unlocked multiplier, overclocking is very simple and easy.

socket 1366 was replaced in november 2011. it's not a sandy-bridge chipset and functionally, it's slower than the socket 2011. if you read the system description fully, it is a used system which Sperky will end up paying too much for. i'm very surprised the guy crammed 2 triple slot video cards onto that motherboard. it's doable but the airflow to the primary card is seriously hampered.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  To sum up what ya'll said, it sounds like it is a good used system but I'll also take the suggestion to look at a newer system with the suggested component changes and what that would price out at.

Thanks again guys  <S>

oy, for $1600 you could have a brand new system with triple monitors and have money left over...

Not a good deal, IMHO.

I've contacted TilDeath to see if he could put something together.  Aside from that connection, can you suggest any others?  gyrene- I'm in the Whitewater area btw...
