Second thoughts
« on: June 06, 2012, 11:45:10 PM »
Mostly looking for some reassurance that the PSU I bought is good. I know SeaSonic is the most suggested, but being that it's almost midnight and my PSU just....exploded, about 30mins ago, I'm still in a bit of a haze. Old OCZ StealthXStream 700 Watt lasted me a good 3-4 years before...poof.

Ordered the following:

SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W

and a case to fit the thing, my current one, as much as I love it, only fits PSUs up to 140mm deep.

NZXT M59 - 001BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

It'll be powering/casing: AMD Phenom II x2 555 BE, 4GB DDR3, EVGA GTX 260, and the other normal things, fans, DVD, HDD, sound-card.

If someone knows something about either of those that should stop the order, I'm listening. It's been so long since I upgraded these parts I just want some reassurance. :)

Your going against my methods. The case is chosen by the components inside and not the other way round. Although its easy to buy a big case and fit little things inside its not good to go the other way and then say "I had to use a smaller PSU." Not good.

Bit tired, so bit confused. But I'm basing the case around the components, for the most part, is that wrong? I was ordering the new PSU due to a sudden failure, but had to get a new Case (one listed) because my current one (Aerocool Case) doesn't fit that new PSU. Or were you referring to the fact I had to buy a small PSU (dead now) to fit my current Aerocool case?

Again, tired and confused, so could just be I misread all of that!

No need to cancel the order.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

No... I was just pointing out its a bit backwards. Im not familiar with the case but the PSU is great. I use two in quite a few of my cases and singles in others. Just pointing out that if the 140mm dimension caused a problem with getting the right PSU or something that I would look at other cases.

Without knowing the full up power requirements its hard to chose PSUs properly.

in this case it's easy, a 600watt seasonic would be more than enough for his system.

Ah yea, the 140mm thing was kind of an oversight on my part with the current Aerocool case. I bought it purely for size/portability/looks. Everything worked great...til the PSU went kaput after a few years. :)

Glad to know I chose the right PSU (slightly more powerful than the old one) in my daze though, woke up kinda hoping it was a bad dream, but alas. Went a little more powerful due to the potential for an upgrade in a few months.

Have you been able to check the components to see that nothing else was toasted when the PSU failed? Otherwise you might be out more than a couple of hundred on just the PSU and case.

I'm currently running the system on a spare (read, tore out of another system) PSU and everything is working fine. GPU is all I can't be sure of due to this PSU only being ~350Watt (yea right, crappy $25 PSU).

The PSU that "blew" and started smoking, I don't know the insides of a PSU so no idea if anything looks off:

I like to be a lot more accurate myself.

1701E - I can see where the smoke came from and that larger cap doesn't look right. Far too much dust in that one.

A little late to the party and I'm sure it's all together and running fine now, but, I've looked at buying that case a few times and still like it, just opted for something else.  You might want to invest the few bucks for a top fan, just because.  Remember to clean the front air filters regularly and enjoy it for a long time.

Had to order some new fans and fan controller so took a bit to get everything together. Every works great, and aside from being a pain in the rear to learn a new case, liking it so far. Learning how to route wires with a new case was a bit hard, been routing wires in that M40 for about 3-4 years now.
So after ~$250 everything is running great and the following was replaced/bought: 1x Seasonic 750W Gold PSU, 1x NZXT M59 Case, 1x NZXT Sentry 5.25" Fan controller, 2x 120mm Green LED Fans, 1x 120mm fan (to match current 120mm). Airflow is about ~200CFM in both ways, Fan controller set-up on all 4 fans and temp sensors to audibly warn of overheating around the HDD/PSU/GPU/Mobo (set to 50C).
Runs great, and looks nice, I'm happy. :D

Camera is being odd, but:

M59
750W
Sentry
Slipstream
120 Green

Thanks for the reassurance on the PSU/Case. Hope to use 'em for a long time to come. :)
