The Strategic Air and Space museum in Omaha, NE????
« on: June 09, 2012, 04:10:05 PM »
Has anyone here been to it? I travel a lot for work and this week I will be going to Nebraska. I was thinking about stopping by here. I was wondering if anyone has been to it and if it is any good or not?

Went there a few years ago, perhaps close to 3 years now.

To me, it's worth the trip.  :)  I'd be surprised if you felt otherwise after visiting it.

I went during the week of Thanksgiving, so it was pretty empty.  I'm not sure how crowded it will be during the summer.

Yeah it's worth a look. It's not a real big place but what they do have is very interesting. When I was there they were in the process of restoring a B-29 IIRC, (probably done by now). They have a few WW2 birds, like the B17 and C47 but mostly Cold War aircraft. The SR71 Blackbird was pretty cool. Curtis LeMay's desk and a Atom bomb was also there, I thought that was pretty neat as well. Good literature in the gift shop.

If you do go, take a good camera. It's pretty dark in there in places and my cheap camera didn't take very good pictures.

I've been there many times, me and my little brother broke the simulator when we were like 14 and 12 years old  :devil.

Always worth the trip, then again pretty much all of my family lives in Omaha

When I was there, the museum was actually on Offutt AFB.  My understanding is that it is now south of Omaha.  I dont remember much about it anymore.  Too much time has passed.  But if you think it is small now, it was tiny then.  80-84

I recall it being about halfway between Omaha and Lincoln.

That sounds about right, I got a chance to visit the museum probably 2-3 years ago while I was out visiting a friend in Omaha.

There is zero possibility that there is anything else more interesting in that entire state than that museum........unless they have a statue of marlin perkins.

The museum is good.. however, the Henry Doorly Zoo is one of the best in the country.  http://www.omahazoo.com/

I need to get back to the SAC museum.. been about 5 years.

I agree, the zoo was excellent, even in the late Autumn, when it was chilly.

Went to look decades ago when it was part of Offut and the brits were flyin that delta wing bomber out of Offut now an then.

They had a B-36 on the ramp that just boggled my mind.. I think the B-17 was parked under one wing?

I was in 8th grade then .. the air show was a guy flyin an F-102 Dart and he wore an orange flight suit.
That was a long .. longlong . time ago ..when my dad was stationed there.
