Willys Jeep
« on: June 10, 2012, 06:23:44 PM »
getting 3 Willys Jeep's all in real rough shape. Gonna be a project for the next couple years, and albeit getting spare parts from the guy, some of which are good, I will need to buy other parts (such as brake lines). Seeing I'm not a millionaire, I wont be able to buy all the parts in one sitting, and I'm also looking for competitive pricing and good customer service. Anyone have any expierence with any stores/warehouses that deal with Willys Jeep's and would recommend them? Theres a few places near me supposedly, but I want to get other prices so I can shop around and buy the best price. Some of you may be asking where I'm getting the knoweledge from to do this., and its a simple answer. my Father had a CJ5 when he first got his license, but his "uncle" had 2A's, which happen to be the model I'll be getting, and he would help his "uncle" with repairs and the sorts on them. Basic knowledge base. There is one old time mechanic who started backyard and he gets hard when a real oldie rolls into his shop. Anything my father and I cant do, hell help us out im sure. Least my free time wont be going to video games or facebook anymore, and itll go somewhere constructive.

When I was a 4th grader, in about 1979/80, US Cavalry (a surplus store near Fort Knox)vwas selling crated jeeps in cosmoline for $400... I really really wish that I had had $400 at the time, but I was roughly ten years old at the time...

I am in the middle of restoring a 1944 Willys MZ2 USMC Radio Jeep

I highly suggest you check out a few things.
First, go to G503.com, all the parts you need for good prices. Beyond the parts sign up for the forums. The absolute best resource available for information on restoring an old war time Jeep.
To give you an idea why these forums rock, I'll give you the link to my restoration thread. So many folks there that give great advice and so much help.
http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=96&t=194049

For a wiring harness call Vintage Wiring of Maine. They do great work and can build it to accommodate anything you need (12 volt/6 Volt, alternator vs generator, etc..)

Here's some more great links to help get you started...
How To's and detailed information: http://www.1944mb.com/default.aspx
Some more good info: http://ww2jeeps.com/
Ren has Lots of good stuff plus his book is a "Must Have": http://www.rensjeep.com/
JeepDraw: If there's a blueprint, picture, or drawing you need.. JeepDraw has it. http://jeepdraw.com/

Ok, now onto the books you need...
Get the "Complete WW2 Military Jeep Manual TM 9-803 1803A 1803B -3-1 Manual" (G503 has it so do many others. JeepDraw has PDF's you can download)
Get the appropriate parts list book. https://www.vintagejeeps.com/pc-1284-26-book-snl-g503-1944-parts-list-parts-44.aspx

Anytime you have a question you could feel free to let me know, but I highly suggest getting yourself on those forums asap. Some of the guys there helped write the manuals.

Join your local MVPA... look that up at MVPA.org

Sooooo much more info I can't type it fast enough. With patience, time, and money you can go from this...

To This: (Not mine... yet..)

BTW.. the other sites the folks above me quoted may be just fine and give good service...
I have used Ron's (G503.com) site and http://www.kaiserwillys.com/ for all my parts. I've spent about 6k in parts to date and have learned way more than I ever thought I would about Jeeps. When I bought it she ran. Now, she even has the right guts and should be motor-pool ready by July 4th.

If your's is an old wartime Jeep, you can't go wrong using the right parts. Most of my parts are "NOS" (New old stock) that came out of boxes sealed 67 years ago, anything else is reproductions of the originals. Just matters how "historic" you want to get.

Oh yeah.. JEEP stands for

Pocket!

wide and tc ill check them out. thanks!

Also.. a great site for uploading pics is http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/ free and used by a lot of folks in this hobby.
There's 3 things to check to find out what type and what year on the old ones. Serial number on the frame (inside front bumper gusset drivers side behind the front bumper), serial number on the engines (either on a rounded boss on the right side or above the water pump), serial number on the body (stamped into the gusset that attaches the body to the frame, drivers side under the hood... note the shape of the gusset.)
Go here for more details http://www.rensjeep.com/sernum.html

Here's some more good links.
I go to this guy when my main parts guy doesn't have something: http://www.kaiserwillys.com/ Good customer service, good parts, prices are a touch higher than Ron.
Ron Fitzpatricks Jeep Parts: http://www.g503.com/ the "Go To" guy for most people in this hobby. Hands down best customer service and top quality parts. Most competitive out of the big boys. All of his parts are accurate to the originals whether they be NOS or Repros. I can't recommend this more. I was trying to figure out my alternator vs generator issue and he spent about 45min talking to me about options and costs without being pushey.

Good prices and some rare parts: https://www.armyjeepparts.net/
Decent prices, good parts: http://www.debellajeepparts.com/
When you need to replace dataplates go here: http://rdrnl.home.xs4all.nl/4UWPIntro2.html
When you need paint stencils, go here: http://www.militarystencils.com/Default.aspx
When you need tires.. go here: http://www.cokertire.com/ (WW2 Jeeps used 16x6 tires, with tubes and combat rims)

Sorry.. I'm obsessed so if I spammed your thread my apologies.. LOL! Take your time, before you buy anything be sure you know what you need/want, find out what exactly you got there. I thought I just had some old army Jeep, turns out it's a rare variant and only 1 out of every 600 Jeeps came configured like mine. You may have an old holden (ambulance Jeep) or radio jeep or even an old slat grill. There's so much to learn and every time you turn a bolt you find out something new.

I'm an idiot and just realized you're talking about a CJ2A.... ./facepalm

Most of the parts guys I just linked up also have the parts for the 2A's.

This link will take you through an entire ground up restoration of a sweet CJ2A. Great pictures and info too.

Wiseguy, thank you for spamming  :lol

Local Antique wartime/citizen vehicle restorer 20 minutes from me knows the owner of Vintage Wiring of Maine, personally. Deffinitly looking at them for my wiring needs, regardless of price. Also, ever hear of Crane or something along those lines for repro/NOS parts?

I want it to be the real deal when its done. Vintage or reproduced parts only, none of this japanese made stuff. If you saw the three jeeps you would cry about the amount of work that needs doing, but I'll steal pictures of the body when I go to pay the guy saturday, just to tease you about the work needing done. Thankfully, he has some spare body panels (2 new fenders, spare tailgate), so I can save a couple bucks there. Dreading when I get the frames sandblasted, havent looked at them in detail, but I'm not sure I wanna jump into into looking at them based on the bodies of the Jeeps.

Before I spend a penny on parts I need to begin restoring it, I'm buying every sort of manual I can find for the 2A, make a list of what I have and dont have and need for the restoration (some things are obvious, like the brake lines, fuel lines, wheel bearings), other things I'm gonna have to take em off and see how they look and go from there. What I cant use, I'm bringing to a junkyard for spare money for parts, such as the cracked frame on the '47, and other things I'll sell if I cant salvage them but they're worth the money to sell.

Debating on the color, but I think im gonna do an Olive Drab Green, kinda make it more historical.

One last quesiton right now. All the jeeps were used for plowing snow. the 48 has the holes for the pump drilled right through the plate with the VIN, the '47 doesnt have a plate, and niether does the '46. You know of any places that may be able to do a plate with an existing vin?

on the passenger side of the engine bay where they put the plate with the model and VIN. the previous owner(s) drilled three holes through it so, yes I can get a VIN off it, but it looks like watermelon with three holes.IF I have to deal with it, I will, but I would rather get it replaced if I could.

I came across a 2A a couple of blocks away painted OD with full US military markings. It looked cool although you could see some of the original yellow poking out. As far as I know none of the 2As actually served in the US military? Still it will look well.
